Abbaye de L'Epau, Le Mans

(4.3/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
The Abbaye de L'Epau was a refuge for a heartbroken queen. Queen Berengaria, wife of Richard the Lionheart, founded the Abbey 1229 at age 59 in an attempt to find peace after a long struggle to keep her inheritance intact. The abbey underwent restoration may times since the 13th century, but often these were interrupted by war and financial hardship; it was eventually completed in 1991. Stroll through the tranquil grounds to admire the modern recreation of a queen’s final respite. The cornices and arches of the ceiling bloom overhead and you'll feel the serenity that Berengaria longed for. You’ll admire the attention renovators gave to the continuity of construction, with the aged stone and warm indoor lighting that make for a contemplative setting.  Put Abbaye de L'Epau into our Le Mans tourist route planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Le Mans.

  • An old Abbey with a number of architecturalles curosites. It's nice and pleasant to visit. It is also interesting to know the culture and habits of the time of the creation of this Abbey to understand what she's doing here!

  • The Abbey one of the jewels of the local heritage to the same title as the Gallo-Roman wall and the Plantagenet city. The building belongs to to the County Council. It is well maintained and pleasant to visit. Maybe it a little explanation in different places to help the visitor to project themselves into the past and experience its history.
