Abbaye de L'Epau, Le Mans
(4.3/5 based on 90+ reviews on the web)
The Abbaye de L'Epau was a refuge for a heartbroken queen. Queen Berengaria, wife of Richard the Lionheart, founded the Abbey 1229 at age 59 in an attempt to find peace after a long struggle to keep her inheritance intact. The abbey underwent restoration may times since the 13th century, but often these were interrupted by war and financial hardship; it was eventually completed in 1991. Stroll through the tranquil grounds to admire the modern recreation of a queen’s final respite. The cornices and arches of the ceiling bloom overhead and you'll feel the serenity that Berengaria longed for. You’ll admire the attention renovators gave to the continuity of construction, with the aged stone and warm indoor lighting that make for a contemplative setting.  Put Abbaye de L'Epau into our Le Mans tourist route planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Le Mans.

  • A corner perfect for walking. Close to various circuit and vary for running / biking / hiking... The Abbey is very well maintained.

  • Historical monument with very pretty pieces but I find not the tour. A Tablet is lent with a plan and points to do with some explanation dictated but there is no particular path and try the doors to search open rooms (a room had forgotten to be open) Unfortunately we went there the day of installation of the collecting leaves and Christmas garlands so rather noisy... The Church is beautiful but empty cartons lying around which is a shame...

  • Although the Abbey is no longer that only part of his past, things to see. Events. A park. What to spend a good time.
