Abbaye de L'Epau, Le Mans

(4.4/5 based on 100+ reviews on the web)
The Abbaye de L'Epau was a refuge for a heartbroken queen. Queen Berengaria, wife of Richard the Lionheart, founded the Abbey 1229 at age 59 in an attempt to find peace after a long struggle to keep her inheritance intact. The abbey underwent restoration may times since the 13th century, but often these were interrupted by war and financial hardship; it was eventually completed in 1991. Stroll through the tranquil grounds to admire the modern recreation of a queen’s final respite. The cornices and arches of the ceiling bloom overhead and you'll feel the serenity that Berengaria longed for. You’ll admire the attention renovators gave to the continuity of construction, with the aged stone and warm indoor lighting that make for a contemplative setting.  Put Abbaye de L'Epau into our Le Mans tourist route planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Le Mans.

  • Wonderful site, for a ride as soon as the weather. Buildings are very restored property, and the Tablet is very practice and we learn many things about this ancient Abbey... we would have liked more, more about our host Bérangère of Navarre, more on this pan that is important to our history, more on this time; history or religion and power was very nested. Small friendly shop, welcome.
