Cathedrale Notre-Dame, Le Havre

4.5
#3 of 10 in Sightseeing in Le Havre
Church Tourist Spot
One of Le Havre's oldest buildings, Cathedrale Notre-Dame stands among a few lucky structures to have survived the destruction of World War II, although it did sustain heavy damage. Originally built in the 16th century, the church underwent multiple rounds of remodeling and reconstruction in the following centuries. When you visit the centrally located cathedral, it's hard to miss the building's unusually low profile, which stems from its construction on marshy ground. The cathedral features a mix of architectural styles, including an ornate Baroque exterior facade combined with a late medieval-era bell tower. Be sure to enter the building to explore its vaulted halls and naves, a collection of crucifixes, and the remains of an organ from the 1600s. • It is almost unbelievable that this was almost completely rebuilt after the war. There is a display of information on the devastation and rebuilding that you have to see to appreciate this. Visited wi...  more »
  • The Cathedral, which dates back to the 16emem century, is one of the only surviving buildings of the destruction of the second world war - after partial restoration and reconstruction. His presence, in the middle of Perret concrete buildings is somewhat surprising. One of the unique features is that the building is at a lower level than that of the current city, which was rebuilt on the old debris, after the bombing. The main façade is Baroque. She is flanked by a massive Tower.

  • A very nice building as this Notre Dame! A building that has suffered lots of damage during the war but the Havre rebuilt it... A wall carrying Jesus on the cross was not destroyed... A stroke of luck? Soft music of barley greeted us during our visit... Memorable...

  • Great church to see the effects of WWII. The pictures inside and the cathedral now show what a determined congregation can do to overcome adversity. The crucifix on display with shrapnel damage is moving. While the majority of the church were destroyed, the façade was left and rebuilt around. It may not be the most fancy church in France or Le Havre, but the crucifix is worth stopping to see.
  • Great Cathedral with free entrance and great atmosphere. We liked it and we like to come back!
