Cathedrale Notre-Dame, Le Havre

(4.5/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
One of Le Havre's oldest buildings, Cathedrale Notre-Dame stands among a few lucky structures to have survived the destruction of World War II, although it did sustain heavy damage. Originally built in the 16th century, the church underwent multiple rounds of remodeling and reconstruction in the following centuries. When you visit the centrally located cathedral, it's hard to miss the building's unusually low profile, which stems from its construction on marshy ground. The cathedral features a mix of architectural styles, including an ornate Baroque exterior facade combined with a late medieval-era bell tower. Be sure to enter the building to explore its vaulted halls and naves, a collection of crucifixes, and the remains of an organ from the 1600s. • Nice place to come to rest. Here in the beautiful old cathedral with its cross-vaults. A short visit worthwhile nonetheless. In contrast to this can be seen is the Eglise St. Joseph then to see a direct comparison of an old building to a new building.

  • If there is any reason why visit the Cathedral, these are: 1, his gratuity and 2, because it is of the few monuments, if not the only one, that still retain what wind from the bombs of the second world war could not take. Inside, I gives me the feeling of being a clear Gothic with Romanesque overtones if possible, albeit century XVI. The facade has tightened enough detail to highlight a discreet Baroque. It also is rare to have visitors, so if you don't have time to mass, the solemnity is multiplied. Apart from that, a few minutes will be enough to peer inside and offer him the respect which the last did not desquebrajar.

  • I'm sure if you are in Le Havre you are going to visit the other more prominent church. Once you have done that, it's certainly worth the walk over to this church. As this was the 12th day of a cruise...  more »

  • Pequena e aconchegante, a Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Le Havre é visita obrigatória para quem visita a cidade portuária que serviu de partida para milhares de famílias de emigrantes que deixaram a Europa no século XIX.
  • Very nice Cathedral, recently restored, in a district completely destroyed during the second world war...
