#8 of 69 in Museums in Nord
Established by Henri Matisse in 1952, Musee departemental Matisse houses the third largest collection of his works in France. Matisse specified the way his works should be arranged, so you will view them as he wanted you to. The 17 exhibit rooms feature more than 170 Matisse works, 65 paintings by Auguste Herbin (given by the artist), paintings by Geneviève Claisse (relative and student of Herbin), elements of the Tériade collection of artists' books, and 30 photographs from the Henri Cartier-Bresson collection. • We had a guided visit while 2 of our kids were found a 2 hour painting workshop. They really enjoyed it. For the visit Only take the guide with you want to know every details of Matisse’s life. If not...  more »
  • Very nice discovery of this museum through an original idea to invite students from different art schools to work on Matisse. This allows to identify the works of Matisse but also of a new generation. The building is very nice and the works can be admired in the calm (and its stained glass Windows) or in the excitement of the great Hall of the DRC; The location

  • It is a nice interesting Museum with a nice garden. The guided tour allows to better understand the personality of Matisse through his various paintings, sculptures, collages etc... The Museum also houses works of art by artists such as Chagall, Fernand Léger, Auguste Herbin etc... Favorite for stained glass Windows that are beautiful when the weather is sunny ^ ^

  • Matisse put French early 20th century painting on the fauvist trail. Excellent, low priced museum for the quality it offers. It puts Matisse in perspective with his contempories.
  • Interesting museum of Matisse's work. Nice public gardens.
  • Very nice museum about the life of Matisse. All the steps of the artistic life of the painter are covered.
  • Visiting this museum we understand Matisse's universe. Impossible not to be touched by his sensitiveness. It's magical to discover Chagal, Picasso and Léger hidden somewhere... Children are welcome.
  • Good museum of Matisse's work in a lovely house gardens could be better.
