Chateaux de Lastours are four related castles on a rocky spur overlooking a village and surrounding valleys and rivers. The French Ministry of Culture listed this as a historic monument, and archaeological digs are still being conducted here. Cabaret castle is the primary citadel of the group. You can view a polygonal keep, a tower, ramparts with a round walk, and a crenellated wall constructed with irregular material. Tour Régine is the smallest of the fortresses, and you'll notice that its curtain wall has collapsed. This three-story tower flanked by a spiral staircase was built primarily with white limestone. Surdespine is the least-preserved of the four castles. It features a square tower, rectangular curtain wall, semicircular arched windows, and defensive "murder holes." The Quertinheux Castle has a circular tower and a polygonal curtain wall. Use our Lastours trip maker to add Chateaux de Lastours and other attractions to your Lastours vacation plans.

  • Absolute must do! Incredible views and history. Recommend reading up before you go (if English speaking). English guide is good… but there’s so much more to know. Amazing site!

  • The surrounding are beautiful, but they should reshape the expectations. The guide for foreigners is very short, nothing you won't find on Wikipedia. Half of the content are stones without any art...

  • One of the most beautiful places I've visited. Simply stunning: 4 castles over the small village of Lastours, one after another, with gorgeous views and very well preserved structures. Great information centre that you need to access before you get to the castles. If you're around Carcassonne, you can't miss these castles so closely linked to Cathar history.
  • Be aware that visiting this castle definitely requires around two hours of hiking and there are steep steps. We started visiting the hilltop with a view over the castles. We then descended the hill through a Forrest path until we reached the entrance to the castle. The view is exceptional and I would definitely recommend this
  • Gorgeous. Epic. Ethereal. The hike is a bit intense if you are wearing regular shoes, but definitely doable. Be prepared for a workout with views that are totally worth it. It feels like a mix between heaven and a photoshopped dream world. The cypress trees, wow! Windy in fall/winter! Bring sunglasses or glasses to protect your eyes on super blustery🍃 days!
  • Very beautiful place, but for some reason you have to pay to hike on the path that leads you to the castles, but it is the only way to get there. The hike is abojt 40-60 minutes to the first castle and then another hour to visit the other ones.
  • One of the highlights of our trip to this region. The entrance fee is very reasonable for the time you spend here and the views are worth every penny. The ticket office was helpful and informative. The walk is challenging in the summer heat but manageable and can be done in trainers without proper hiking boots. Take water and a hat if attempting in the midday sun.
