Abbaye de Lagrasse, Lagrasse

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Lagrasse
Ruin Tourist Spot
Abbaye de Lagrasse, a Romanesque Benedictine abbey, dates back to the seventh century. The abbey was of tremendous religious and political importance in the 12th century and was fortified during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. Look for the small cloister with carved columns depicting The Luxury. The upper gallery leads to the abbey chapel, where you can admire its highly decorated walls. The Romanesque church was constructed with a single nave ending in a presbytery with a transept and three apses, and an octagonal bell tower. During restoration efforts, builders discovered an ancient Romanesque portal with a marble sculpted arch. The monk's dormitory features an ogival vault with a timber framework. • We visited the public part that the restoration project is still ongoing. A characteristic Abbey of the medieval past of this beautiful region. To do.

  • We visited the religious part with a Canon as a guide; visit really informative and beautiful with its superb cloister; the Canon explained the why and how of their presence within the Abbey. buildings heavily damaged in 2004, the Abbey a little at a time find splendor (still twenty years to complete the work according to the Canon); a haven of peace and rest during the visit, we will stay there much longer! A must-see!

  • A highlight in the sector. Two visits. A secular the other nun as part is held by the religious still in square (cloister, Church, steeple...). So two entries paid! But not expensive. We did that the first, very interesting and very old. Dormitory, bakery, sacristy, etc. Visit commented or not. One of the most powerful Abbey of Languedoc from the 12th to the 16th century including.

  • Well-preserved Abbey. There are 2 visits possible. (Each to €4) The visit of the newer part where still fathers life can only be visited in the afternoon. We visited so the old part. Beautiful buildings, but too bad that the spaces were empty. Missed opportunity to e.g. a few tools in the bakery display, ...

  • Great Abbey with its old tower fortified still in very good condition well that never finished. Prefer to visit the party deprived of the Abbey (€4), which will allow you to visit in the middle of the canons and you approach closer to the tower. You can also walk in the gardens of the Abbey. The visit of the public part is also € 4.

  • A wonderful place. You should deal but necessarily with the painful history of the Cathars.
