Abbaye de Lagrasse, a Romanesque Benedictine abbey, dates back to the seventh century. The abbey was of tremendous religious and political importance in the 12th century and was fortified during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. Look for the small cloister with carved columns depicting The Luxury. The upper gallery leads to the abbey chapel, where you can admire its highly decorated walls. The Romanesque church was constructed with a single nave ending in a presbytery with a transept and three apses, and an octagonal bell tower. During restoration efforts, builders discovered an ancient Romanesque portal with a marble sculpted arch. The monk's dormitory features an ogival vault with a timber framework. • Too bad, works were programmed, but a discount was applied. We came here a few years ago, rehabilitation is in short, once completed, the visit will be a plus

  • During the French Revolution the Abbey is split into 2 parts, which was then sold to a (wealthy) each family. The left part-public property-is to visit for years, the right part-since 2006 again in the hands of monks-is rapidly restored. In both portions were there during our visit work in progress whereby some rooms are not accessible and you sometimes looks against objectives. In the left part you get for that inconvenience a discount on the entrance fee. At the monks ... not. To get a good idea of the construction of the Abbey to have, so you need the 2 parts visits and that therefore cost you (what) money. In both portions is a Dutch fold leaflet or brochure available; that of the left also includes a map of the medieval and interesting Lagrasse. The Abbey of Fonfroide enchanted us actually more.

  • In August 2011, one was still remodeling and restoration. Too bad, as it was quite messy. Must be really be nicely! Also the village itself is worth it. Monastery consists of two parts with separate entrance fees.
