Abbaye de Lagrasse, Lagrasse
(3.8/5 based on 260+ reviews on the web)
Abbaye de Lagrasse, a Romanesque Benedictine abbey, dates back to the seventh century. The abbey was of tremendous religious and political importance in the 12th century and was fortified during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. Look for the small cloister with carved columns depicting The Luxury. The upper gallery leads to the abbey chapel, where you can admire its highly decorated walls. The Romanesque church was constructed with a single nave ending in a presbytery with a transept and three apses, and an octagonal bell tower. During restoration efforts, builders discovered an ancient Romanesque portal with a marble sculpted arch. The monk's dormitory features an ogival vault with a timber framework. • Superb Abbey in a village crossed by a river. On the banks of this river is practised the picnic. Busy place

  • The Abbey of Lagrasse is no big deal, certainly. It is pretty on the outside but inside is not of this world. There are two parts, one of the religious (visit at certain times) and one public. The public are open-plan rooms with much dust, a broken vase, and a patio with a tree. There is a video (only in French) which explains the history of the Abbey. The visit is €4 and we only entered the public part. There best abbeys in all France to visit.
