Dune du Pilat, La Teste-de-Buch

When you visit Dune du Pilat, you'll immediately realize why this immense, tall dune is one of the most visited natural sites in the entire country. Officially called the Dune of Pilat, this unique land mass located in Arcachon Bay is the tallest sand dune in Europe and a favorite site for hikers and windsurfers. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and an enormous pine forest, this dune on a peninsula is one of the most unique landscapes in all of France. Locals call it a "Sand Monster" or a "Menacing Sand Wall." Thanks to recent developments, you can reach the dune easily by car. • Between forest and sea, one of the most beautiful place in France ! Be careful in August, so much people !!! In Apreil or may, it’s perfect, sunny and quiet  more »
  • Of course more high dune in Europe. Well you have to climb without a lift but that's not the problem. The view of the sea on one side and the pines on the other is simply to die! (not the dune)

  • Fabulous outing from Bordeaux (take a train and then bus). Climb up the stairs to the top of this HUGE dune. Watch out for the heat of the day. Wear a hat and take water. Take off your shoes and enjoy the sand (if not too hot). This is an active kids fantasy. Biggest dune ever.
  • Stunning views and good exercise! To enjoy the view you need to climb on top of the sand dune - approx. 100m high - the view at the top is fantastic with on one side a sea of green and on the other side a sea of blue.
  • Getting/Leaving there: bus number 1 from Arcachon train station. Bus ticket can be brought on board. Timetable shown in the pictures. Getting off at Dune de Pilat stop. Walk for some minutes to reach visitor center (which can skip), cafe and shops (can buy water if needed), public toilet (the last/only one), education board (very informative and worth seeing). The dune: walking up from the steps or directly on the sand (more challenging/physical demanding). The dune is big and can spend an hour or so exploring. Very windy up on top so be aware of your hat/cap if you're wearing one. It is easier to walk bare feet, so better take a bag or backpack that is big enough to hold them. Eating : a few cafe and a restaurant near the shops.
  • A must see if you are in the bordeaux area, very impressive.
  • Fantastic place to visit, especially for sunsets! Fun watching the paragliding off the dune. Beautiful sand, wading on it to the tpp of tve dune is hard work. No swimming here as it's a lagoon and quite silted up, maybe it was a bad day and it needed the tide and wind to clear the debris off the beach.
