Abtei La Sauve-Majeure, La Sauve

(70+ reviews on the web)
Religious Site Historic Site
A former Benedictine monastery, Abtei La Sauve-Majeure was founded by Gerald of Sauve-Majeure, who also served as its first abbot. Its name refers to the Silva Major, the great forest that then occupied the whole region known as the Vignoble de l'Entre-Deux-Mers ("vineyard between two seas"). During the Middle Ages the abbey prospered, but by the Renaissance period it was in decline, and the building's structure suffered from neglect for several centuries before it was abandoned. Although now in ruins, the remains of the abbey are still of great interest in terms of Romanesque architecture. Stroll the tranquil grounds, admire the columns decorated with biblical scenes, and climb the 157 steps up the bell tower for sweeping views over the countryside. If you're hungry, dine at the excellent restaurant at the base of the site. For Abtei La Sauve-Majeure and beyond, use our La Sauve tourist route planner to get the most from your La Sauve vacation.
