Take a trip across the seas of the world at Aquarium La Rochelle. The largest aquarium in the country, this private center features 75 aquariums set in the diverse waters of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. It’s home to over 12,000 marine creatures, which live in 3 million L (1.5 million gal) of seawater. From all three floors of the indoor space, you can view massive sharks in the gigantic central tank. Surround yourself with 1,000 jellyfish by walking through the 360° tunnel, and explore the colorful coastal area that reveals the mysteries just off land. The Center for Sea Turtles is an absolute must during your visit. Several children's activities promote ocean conservation and fun for all age groups, while interactive kiosks throughout the center provide information about each environment. Aquarium La Rochelle is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, La Rochelle Edition.

  • Always a pleasure to ride between jellyfish, fish, Octopus, or sharks. In the several years I saw only once the basins or aquarium somewhat dirty. Otherwise the atmosphere is really great

  • Absolutely fascistic. A huge range of fish species, all looking in good condition and in ample sized habitats. Impressive coral in many tanks. Well laid out, nicely presented rout around. Didn't take the audio tour, most tanks have sufficient written info in English. Well worth the visit.
  • Have been to a number of similar attractions before, but this was just amazing. Such an original take on showing the various exhibits. Loved it!
  • Really worth your time. It does cost a bit too much but still. Also it's really crowded in summer. You have to wait to see fish. Just check if it's busy with Google Map first to make sure you don't go on a really bad day.
  • Very good. Would recommend the audio as not all info is in English, but lovely aquarium.
  • Great for kids and sea lovers. Opening schedule is good, they open until 23h on the summer. Bathrooms very small and filthy, difficult to use a changing table.

Where to stay in La Rochelle

To discover La Rochelle's rich architectural heritage, book your rooms at a stylish hotel near the city's picturesque old harbor. From there, you can easily explore the city's oldest areas, while remaining within easy walking distance of modern tourist attractions, such as the aquarium and natural history museum. If you're travelling on a limited budget, consider staying farther away from the old harbor, where you can choose from a selection of small inns, private B&Bs, and good-value hostels.
