Fort la Pree, La Flotte
(3.8/5 based on 45 reviews on the web)
Fort de La Prée, built in 1625, is located near the eastern end of the Île de Ré, in France.HistoryIn 1625, the French officer Toiras led the Royalist troops when they captured Ré from the Huguenots under the command of admiral Duke of Soubise. After his victory, Toiras received the title of Count, and became Governor of Île de Ré. It was he who built Fort de La Prée. He also worked on the larger fortifications at Saint-Martin-de-Ré.The Duke Buckingham ignored Fort de La Prée during his three-month siege of Saint-Martin-de-Ré in 1627. This neglect fatally weakened his position on the island. Toiras managed to land troops there and force the English to give up their siege and withdraw in defeat.

  • Musketeers costumes are available in the 1st room. Children are already immersed in an adventure (as parents). The visit can be done without a guide, panels trace the history. The fort is well preserved and the surroundings are clean and maintained. Cute pictures of holiday!

  • I do not advise to make the visit of the Interior of the fort, there is nothing exceptional as the rooms in the fort are rented out for receptions. Outdoor visit enough and allows to have a beautiful view on the sea. Beware 'free' visits are between 10 h - 12 h and 16 h - 17 h 45 guided tours of 16 to 18. Possible free visits during guided tours but the gate is closed during this time so possible output to 16 h.
