Chateau de Joux, La Cluse-et-Mijoux

4.5
Experience the evolution of military architecture from the Middle Ages at Chateau de Joux. It was a stone castle, transformed later into a fort, then a state prison, and now, it is a Monument Historique. The fortress currently houses an arms museum that exhibits more than 600 rare weapons dating to the early 18th to 20th centuries, including a rare 1717 rifle. The Route Abolitions memorial allows you to retrace the routes used by black slaves to escape. The castle also has one of the deepest wells in all of Europe reaching a depth of 120 m (390 ft). Famous architect, Vauban, modernized the fort in 1690, and recent renovations keep with medieval design patterns so you can imagine what it may have looked like around 1000 CE. A visit to Chateau de Joux represents just the start of the adventure when you use our La Cluse-et-Mijoux trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • We enjoy the heritage days to visit the castle of Joux. The guide was very interesting and the tour was interactive. Remember to take good shoes because it slips a little and what cover you.

  • With more than 300 steps in an hour and a half, the staff warns of the conditions of the visit (to abstain in the case of Vertigo). The building and the views are spectacular and reward the efforts well distributed throughout the course. The commentary of the guide was interesting, varied, easy to follow and remember.

  • We had a guided tour of the site and were able to understand and appreciate the history: this fort was actually used only once but the place was strategic. Very good feedback from the guide.

  • Stopped here on a drive from Beaune to Lucerne - about midway through the trip. Pretty facade and you get a guided tour (albeit in French, so make sure to grab the paper guide at the entrance station). Tour takes about 1.25-1.5 hours, but was actually quite interesting as you hear the whole history of the fort/castle over the centuries. Also, very interesting history related to the American/Haitian slave trade and imprisonment of a major leader of the uprisings by Napoleon. By far the coolest thing was near the end of the tour when the guide drops water to the bottom of a well (in complete darkness) and it takes several seconds for it to hit - unique and awesome experience!
  • Very nice military fortress. Very cool guide but the tour is only in French.
  • Beautiful castle built in the middle age on top of a rocky mountain, has a very interesting history, and has survived many battles in the past.
  • Very nice guided visit.
  • A Very interesting story
