L'Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine, Issoire

(4.8/5 based on 120+ reviews on the web)
Built in the 12th century, L'Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine is one of the five major Romanesque abbeys in France with 19th century interior restorations. It boasts the most impressive steeple and the characteristic silhouette due to its massive oblong architecture and octagonal bell tower. It is built from a type of limestone called "arkose" that gives the abbey its signature color. The exterior decoration and mosaics are ornately made with a type of volcanic rock called "basalt." Visit the interior adorned with 19th century Italian-style frescoes that are rare in France and the ornately carved "chapiteaux" (flared columns) with the famous "Last Supper" carving. A visit to L'Abbatiale Saint-Austremoine represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Issoire vacation trip planner to plot your vacation.

  • I love her bedside! Alone, it brings together all of the Romanesque art auvergnat and the mosaic of Arab inspiration is beautiful. The overview of this Abbey is very nice. We have enough hindsight (which is rarely the case for the other churches) for all to admire and take into account the masterpiece of the Auvergne Romanesque construction. The interior décor, with his paintings, is spectacular.

  • During the restorations of the nineteenth century, we rendered to the Church its polychrome Interior. It may shock. But at least, she says that all the churches were painted in the middle ages and that current used to bare walls does not match the first reality. Currently in outside catering.

  • The Interior of the Church is fully painted, which seems quite rare in France. The proportions are harmonious. A very beautiful Romanesque church, to see if you're in the area.
