Vieux-Château, Ile d'Yeu
(4.3/5 based on 95+ reviews on the web)
Olivier IV de Clisson built Vieux-Château to protect the peaceful islanders from foreign invasion, but it didn’t stop the pirate (according to the French) Robert Knolles from occupying the island for 37 years. The remains of the fortress still bear a sinister look against the backdrop of the sea. You can almost imagine the stalwart Sir Robert pacing along the battlements and stopping to gaze at the water. You aren’t the first to be inspired by the castle’s location, it also served as inspiration for "Herge" in the "Adventures of Tintin" comic book series. • How can this 16th century castle it always benefit from a tower in as good condition? Impressive and captivating! Beware, the castle was closed during our visit! May be open at other times of the year?

  • It's like in the BD of Tintin "Black island", an old Castle suspended flan of cliff with the ocean from breaking at his feet: beautiful and do with mandatory bike!

  • The castle is one of the attractions to do in Yeu Island, see this building still standing (although he suffered a lot) after so many centuries, and despite the ferocity of the elements... is puzzling on the capacity building of our ancestors. Pity it was closed when we went during the Thanksgiving holiday
