Saint Catherine's Church, Honfleur

(4.7/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web)
the largest church made out of wood in France, Saint Catherine's Church is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. A wooden sculpture shows her holding a wheel and a sword. The first nave is the oldest part of the building, dating to the second half of the 15th century. It was built using naval construction techniques, which gives the impression of an upside-down ship's hull. In the 16th century, a second nave was added, whose vault was like the wooden vaults of modest Gothic churches. The famous "axe masters" of the city’s naval yards created this lovely building without using any saws, just like their Norman ancestors and the Vikings before them. There's a bell tower separate from the principal building. • Amazing wooden church. very moving relic of the middle ages, spared by the fire. Definitely worth a visit, including the tuilettes of wood covering the exterior façade.

  • A church located in the town of Honfleur with two unusual features: a it is built entirely of wood, on the other hand it has two naves. Originated from 1468 in the then still fortified city the Church from 1596 to a second ship was added because the city grew rapidly. That wood was taken as material, has to do with that wood from the nearby forests of TOUQUES was pretty cheap anyway, much cheaper than stone and also faster to process. And that two ships mark the Church to this day, has probably to do with the beams did not permit a larger vessel so that in rapid succession two parallel ships were built. The Church has survived some wild times, so the Interior with plaster was covered but later removed, so that the character of the original wood was preserved. The Church is well worth a visit.

  • Wonderful wood church. Special decoration inside. Really worth the visit !
  • Very interesting tinder roof created by shipbuilders
  • A very pleasant visit! Church entirely covered with slates and tiles of wood. It is a must-see. Honfleur has cultivated his heritage that goes of medieval urbanism in bed Renaissance, and mix culture with its many art galleries. Member "most beautiful detours of France", tourism network founded on initiative of the former Minister of tourism, and honorary mayor of Loches, JJ Descamps.
