Chateau Observatoire Abbadia, Hendaye

4.4
In a country where many sites can trace their history through thousands of years, Chateau Observatoire Abbadia is rather modern.

Built between 1864 and 1879, this Neo-Gothic structure is a study in contrasts: old and new, Eastern and Western, science and Catholicism. It was built for linguist, anthropologist, geographer, and astronomer Antoine d'Abbadie, who designed the eclectic structure around his interests. Upon his death, he left the home to the French Academy of Sciences, which still owns it. • Although we could not make the visit in Spanish, the interior of the castle well deserves to enter. Its decor is... Eccentric. Its blend of styles, colors... He left us fascinated. We Didn't expect something like this looking outside. Highly recommended if visiting the area.

  • Beautiful castle very well located between a sea side and a mountain side. Parking far enough away from the site so for people with reduced mobility, go directly to the grounds of the Park otherwise it is impossible. Moreover make pay 2 euros per person just to go around the Castle and take pictures it's outrageous from where the bad score attributed

  • The Castle, very well located (with a beautiful view of the surroundings-green hills, sea, Bay of Hendaye) is a fantasque construction, neo-Gothic, of Viollet-le-Duc (and two other architects): broken arches, chimeras and other animals, staircase in Staircase... When furniture and interior decoration, restored to perfection (including murals, memories of Ethiopia where d'Abbadie had spent 11 years), they also show this taste for a "modern Middle age" (i.e., late nineteenth century) and comfortable, combining spaces of life and hospitality for friends on the one hand, and place of work-Observatory, library-on the other hand for d'Abbadie and his wife. The visit, much more than an hour, was very interesting: our guide (Milène) did not seem at all reciting a lesson learned, quite the contrary, she told the history of the place and attracted the look at details that one might not have noticed (in French but also part of the time in Spanish).

  • Pretty decent Castle considering the significance of the time. Could have done a better job with the downspouts to ensure the native lime in the Water does not compromise the mortar. Staff not as accommodating as it once was in the 1930s.
  • Very beautiful place, great views, free parking, free bathrooms, vending machine, entry costs 2€, guided tour costs 9,5€ (French, English, Spanish languages). There are also beach, park for walking and other things for outdoor activities. Highly recommended place.
  • Impressive architectural work and interesting history. The guided tour is a must.
  • Stunning palace, such a shame they only offer tours in French. They give you some information in your native language but you miss 50% of the tour. Girl giving the tour was a sweetheart and made the visit fly by. Would have loved to be able to understand everything she said as it seemed to be pretty interesting. Still worth the visit!
  • Interesting château. Detailed information in the guide you are given to read whilst you walk around on your own. View of the sea is great. Gardens are nice too.
