Chateau d'Abbadie, Hendaye

4.4
In a country where many sites can trace their history through thousands of years, Chateau d'Abbadie is rather modern.

Built between 1864 and 1879, this Neo-Gothic structure is a study in contrasts: old and new, Eastern and Western, science and Catholicism. It was built for linguist, anthropologist, geographer, and astronomer Antoine d'Abbadie, who designed the eclectic structure around his interests. Upon his death, he left the home to the French Academy of Sciences, which still owns it. • Located on the outskirts of Hendaye. It offers views to the sea and the amazing forest. The castle itself is amazing, majestic. The visit is worth.

  • The castle is located in Hendaye. Neo Gothic it was built by Viollet the Duke between 1864 and 1873 for the astronomer & Explorer Antoine of d'Abbadie. Today the castle is the property of the Academy of sciences. Antoine d'Abbadie of explores Ethiopia from 1839 to 1849, he reports an accurate map of this little-known country. It will issue reports on the topography and geography. Fond of astronomy, his scientific life continues around the world to study solar eclipses and terrestrial magnetism.

  • An atypical Castle, inside and out. A different and exciting owner who moved his peculiarities to the building. Very well preserved, it is recent. And very beautiful surroundings: the rose of the winds on the cliffs, the Baía de Loia (now closed by landslides but hope to return it to open soon), the twins, the beach, the sea, fields. To spend a day entirely, or more. And if it rains? Ufffff...

  • A very interesting and heavily decorated eclectic XIXth century castle, with a beautiful manicured garden. There's a 1h trek that surrounds the property which is a nice thing to do to help you pass the time if you arrive at noon when it's closed (everyday between 12:00-14:00), with a belvedere point over the ocean (check out the photo below). Entrance fee is 8.90€ for adults for guided visits (only in French). Even though there's a smaller fee for visiting on your own, you are obligated to buy the guided tour as it's the only one available and you're not allowed to enter on your own. For people who don't speak French, there's a document with descriptions in English, but much less detailed than the guide's explanations. You are not allowed to take photos inside and they obsessively ask you to not touch anything, even the walls (we were told to keep our backpacks in front at all times). The door is closed upon the group's entry and the exit is through another door upon finishing the tour.
  • Animal figures on walls and rooflines. Amazing interior. No photos allowed inside. Staff willing to cater for the lone English speaking couple, as well as the French and Spanish. And Germans. It was greatly appreciated.
  • Lovely chateau with fantastic painted decoration, well worth a visit. Could do with a cafe!
  • Lovely view of the sea from the Castle. Tourist attraction.
  • Expectacular
