Chateau d'Abbadie, Hendaye
(4.4/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
In a country where many sites can trace their history through thousands of years, Chateau d'Abbadie is rather modern.

Built between 1864 and 1879, this Neo-Gothic structure is a study in contrasts: old and new, Eastern and Western, science and Catholicism. It was built for linguist, anthropologist, geographer, and astronomer Antoine d'Abbadie, who designed the eclectic structure around his interests. Upon his death, he left the home to the French Academy of Sciences, which still owns it. Make Chateau d'Abbadie a centerpiece of your Hendaye vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Hendaye family vacation planner.

  • This castle is a place to share already on the façade to work with snake, monkey and other animals. And what of the Interior, in with colors that Flash, beautiful furniture. The castle can be visited. I can only advise to all lovers of architecture, Castle, in love to visit this place. You come out disoriented.

  • Castle located on a hill offering views of the sea and the basque country. Have conducted a guided tour of about one hour, very well documented and more inside of the castle is very well furnished.

  • A castle in the middle of hills near the sea. A setting inspired by many travel, astronomy very present. Nothing you've seen in no other Palace and this is why it is really worth to be seen.

  • Very nice castle but fotos are not allowed inside, sadly. But the views are nice
  • To make the most of your visit take the guided tour. I took the guided tour of both interiors and exteriors which was a good choice; I think that without the guide I wouldn't have notice or understood many features of the castle. It is a magical place, worth seeing. I wouldn't mind visiting again.
