4.2
The Château de Hautefort is a French château and gardens located in the town of Hautefort in the Dordogne. The château was reconstructed in the 17th century, and embellished with a Garden à la française. In 1853, the landscape architect, Count of Choulot, redid the gardens, adding a landscape garden, geometric flower gardens, topiary gardens imitating the domes of the château, and a long tunnel of greenery. Next to the formal gardens is a hill with an Italian garden with winding shaded paths. Notable trees in the park include a Magnolia grandiflora and a Cedar of Lebanon. The gardens are listed by the Committee of Parks and Gardens of the Ministry of Culture of France as one of the Notable Gardens of France. In popular cultureThe Château de Hautefort was used in the 1966 film 13 . The Château de Hautefort was featured in the 1998 film Ever After starring Drew Barrymore. The château was portrayed as the character Prince Henry's castle. Many of the film's scenes were shot in and around the Dordogne.

  • Perched on the hillside, you can see this Castle by far coming from Montignac. Very well furnished, with many paintings and a charming garden, the castle of Hautefort is a place to visit during a stay in the Dordogne.

  • Very nice place, French or English gardens are beautiful, all very well maintained.

  • A key location of the surrounding area. Unfortunately a fire in devastated places a few decades ago and we feel that the refurbishment, despite its thoroughness, did lose a part of its history in this place, including the furniture etc. However this castle is a centerpiece of the region! See, and especially guided tour.

  • Magnificent Chateau with extensive gardens. It sits high above the town and commands panoramic views. It is easy to spend a day in the grounds and the local village with its selection of restaurants.
  • Like all the Chateaux in this region, Le Chateau d'Hautefort is like no other. Beautiful and magnificient, it stands tall and majestic and silently tells its story of times gone by. Worth a visit, you will not be disappointed.
  • One of the most beautiful Chateaux that we have seen in France! Price of 9,50€ for a visit is ok, but anyway the gardens and the view are spectacular! Definitely a must-see when you are in the Perigord!
  • Wonderful place to visit especially if the sun is out as the gardens are beautiful.
  • A trully exquisite, impressive place!
