Chateau de Hautefort, Hautefort

4.2
The Château de Hautefort is a French château and gardens located in the town of Hautefort in the Dordogne. The château was reconstructed in the 17th century, and embellished with a Garden à la française. In 1853, the landscape architect, Count of Choulot, redid the gardens, adding a landscape garden, geometric flower gardens, topiary gardens imitating the domes of the château, and a long tunnel of greenery. Next to the formal gardens is a hill with an Italian garden with winding shaded paths. Notable trees in the park include a Magnolia grandiflora and a Cedar of Lebanon. The gardens are listed by the Committee of Parks and Gardens of the Ministry of Culture of France as one of the Notable Gardens of France. In popular cultureThe Château de Hautefort was used in the 1966 film 13 . The Château de Hautefort was featured in the 1998 film Ever After starring Drew Barrymore. The château was portrayed as the character Prince Henry's castle. Many of the film's scenes were shot in and around the Dordogne.

  • The castle is a beautiful building which is staging most of the plieces of this beautiful building. Knowing that the latter burned down in 1968, the restoration is a challenge and a feat of size. See for the reconstitution of the monumental pieces such as fireplaces and cooking in particular. Other parts also have interest in the way of life of the time.

  • One of the most beautiful Chateaux that we have seen in France! Price of 9,50€ for a visit is ok, but anyway the gardens and the view are spectacular! Definitely a must-see when you are in the Perigord!
  • Relatively small formal gardens but well laid out. Not all of the chateau is open to the public but what you can see is impressive. Great VFM at about Eu9 for Adults.
  • Stunning Chateau with beautiful views. Well worth the entry fee.
  • For such a large castle there is very little of interest inside and only part of the castle is open to the public. Outside and gardens look magnificent. Staff is irritable, which is very tipical for french in my experience.
  • Beautiful, tranquil atmosphere. Shame no tearoom
