Musée de Grenoble, Grenoble

4.5
#1 of 49 in Museums in Isere
The art of nature is complemented with the art of humans at the Musée de Grenoble, founded by Louis-Joseph Jay in 1798. Although, Jay had to fight to have his plans approved for the 18,270 sq m ( 196,657 sq ft) building, it was eventually completed and touts an uninterrupted tour from 12th to 21st century art. There are artifacts on multiple floors, but don’t forget to visit the museum’s impressive collection of 19th- and 20th-century African artifacts located downstairs. The place is modern, light and airy; the visit takes place very easily and in a quite satisfactory time. For some artists, one sometimes has the impression that these aren't the best works, but it's still interesting. Surprise: free on 1st Sunday of the month

Statues, the modern and the contemporary, antiques and a sarcophagus, and especially a fine collection of paintings, in a building with large rooms makes the visit very enjoyable. Personally, I go back regularly to review tables XVII and XVIII, some of which are gigantic and others very much accurate and bright. I also recommend visits guided themes, where it invites us to look at and analyze some works from the collection along a different axis every time (2nd and 3rd Sunday of the month at 11: 00). The Open House is free of all 1st Sunday of the month. If it comes 2 x or + the subscription card is a good calculation (included tours, paying visits otherwise).
