Bastille, Grenoble

#1 of 307 in Things to do in Isere
A fortress perched at a vantage point 476 m (1,561 ft) above sea level, Bastille is the most-visited attraction in Grenoble. It is a monumental trek up a steep hill, but you'll be rewarded with a view that Stendhal said, “I haven't the strength to describe..." Alternatively, take a cable car running from Grenoble’s center. Inside the fortress, exhibits honor those who fought. Names of lost heroes can be found throughout, such as at Belvédère Vauban (Vauban Viewpoint) and the Lesdiguières Room. Look for the manmade caves overlooking Grenoble; once part of a defense strategy, they now offer a striking image. Concerts and events fill the fortress all year long.  To visit Bastille on your trip to Grenoble, use our Grenoble online route planner .

  • After an ascent by cable car, we arrived at the Fort of the Bastille. Unfortunately, we went a little late and the shops and different activities to do were already closed... We are, however, a walk, enjoying the great view panoramic offers the Belvédère Vauban, and the ruins of the old fort... We had taken the ticket for the cable car, that we later regretted because the descent on foot must be more enjoyable. To do!

  • It is accessible by foot for the more courageous (great family outing), egg and even car. Starting point of many walks more in height, it is also a historical and cultural site in Grenoble. Many pillboxes and staircases whose access is free. One of my favorite to decompress sites!

  • This is our "go to" outing when we have visitors from the states. It's about an hour hike (if you're fit) to the top. The view is amazing the building itself is nothing worth seeing...  more »

  • One of the major tourist spot in Grenoble, one that is hard to miss. Spectacular panoramic views of the whole city and the nearby mountains. Don't forget to take a pair of binoculars. The terrace area has lots of information on history of the castle and Grenoble. There is not much to explore in the Castle itself. Some live music and other social events adds to the fun.
  • Having gone to the trouble of taking the cable car to get up here you may well wonder why you bothered. On every visit at least half the place is roped off for a "private function" and the section that isn't is woefully understaffed. As if the management would like everyone not in the private party to bugger off but can't bring themselves to say it. Such a shame as the views are great.
  • One the famous tourist place with well maintained. We had dinners in here.
  • Great view of Grenoble Valley and you can the great Alps mountains on a clear day. Take the téléphérique or hike up or down. Great historical sites for those who are War-Buffs
  • Amazing view of Grenoble through a quick but acerbic cable car ascension
