Bastille, Grenoble

(1,200+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site
A fortress perched at a vantage point 476 m (1,561 ft) above sea level, Bastille is the most-visited attraction in Grenoble. It is a monumental trek up a steep hill, but you'll be rewarded with a view that Stendhal said, “I haven't the strength to describe..." Alternatively, take a cable car running from Grenoble’s center. Inside the fortress, exhibits honor those who fought. Names of lost heroes can be found throughout, such as at Belvédère Vauban (Vauban Viewpoint) and the Lesdiguières Room. Look for the manmade caves overlooking Grenoble; once part of a defense strategy, they now offer a striking image. Concerts and events fill the fortress all year long.  Work out when and for how long to visit Bastille and other Grenoble attractions using our handy Grenoble trip itinerary builder.

  • The view of the city is breathtaking. It puts Grenoble in perspective and is a good opportunity to get to know the city from afar before exploring it. I'd recommend going up with the telepheric and going down on foot, because there are many other highlights down the road.
  • One of the reasons I like this city. It's a great vantage point, if you're lucky to have a day of low pollution you will have a spectacular view. I also recommend the view at night. Accessible by car, gondola, stairs and trails
  • Great view above. I recommend to walk instead of taking the cable car if you have time. After the work, sitting there enjoying a drink and looking over the city is one of my favorite time during vacation there.
  • Perfect place for a little excursion in Grenoble. We walked up and down and used that as an excuse to get some fatty fast food after the trip. The top offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains, just beautiful.
  • Really interesting, fantastic views, great teleifaric...Cable car! Great walk up for the pesudo fit! Museum and walks when you get to the top. Also climbing with a safety line all the way from the bottom, plus death slides!
