Bastille, Grenoble

4.7
#1 of 39 in Sightseeing in Isere
Historic Site Nature / Park
A fortress perched at a vantage point 476 m (1,561 ft) above sea level, Bastille is the most-visited attraction in Grenoble. It is a monumental trek up a steep hill, but you'll be rewarded with a view that Stendhal said, “I haven't the strength to describe..." Alternatively, take a cable car running from Grenoble’s center. Inside the fortress, exhibits honor those who fought. Names of lost heroes can be found throughout, such as at Belvédère Vauban (Vauban Viewpoint) and the Lesdiguières Room. Look for the manmade caves overlooking Grenoble; once part of a defense strategy, they now offer a striking image. Concerts and events fill the fortress all year long.  Work out when and for how long to visit Bastille and other Grenoble attractions using our handy Grenoble trip itinerary builder.

  • Nice relaxing stroll up the hill. Excellent views of the township and rivers from the top as well along the way. There are a couple of interesting graffiti art too. Cable because if you are short of time or breath.

  • One of the major tourist spot in Grenoble, one that is hard to miss. Spectacular panoramic views of the whole city and the nearby mountains. Don't forget to take a pair of binoculars. The terrace area has lots of information on history of the castle and Grenoble. There is not much to explore in the Castle itself. Some live music and other social events adds to the fun.
  • Having gone to the trouble of taking the cable car to get up here you may well wonder why you bothered. On every visit at least half the place is roped off for a "private function" and the section that isn't is woefully understaffed. As if the management would like everyone not in the private party to bugger off but can't bring themselves to say it. Such a shame as the views are great.
  • Great view of Grenoble Valley and you can the great Alps mountains on a clear day. Take the téléphérique or hike up or down. Great historical sites for those who are War-Buffs
  • One of the reasons I like this city. It's a great vantage point, if you're lucky to have a day of low pollution you will have a spectacular view. I also recommend the view at night. Accessible by car, gondola, stairs and trails
  • The view of the city is breathtaking. It puts Grenoble in perspective and is a good opportunity to get to know the city from afar before exploring it. I'd recommend going up with the telepheric and going down on foot, because there are many other highlights down the road.
