Bastille, Grenoble

#1 of 303 in Things to do in Isere
A fortress perched at a vantage point 476 m (1,561 ft) above sea level, Bastille is the most-visited attraction in Grenoble. It is a monumental trek up a steep hill, but you'll be rewarded with a view that Stendhal said, “I haven't the strength to describe..." Alternatively, take a cable car running from Grenoble’s center. Inside the fortress, exhibits honor those who fought. Names of lost heroes can be found throughout, such as at Belvédère Vauban (Vauban Viewpoint) and the Lesdiguières Room. Look for the manmade caves overlooking Grenoble; once part of a defense strategy, they now offer a striking image. Concerts and events fill the fortress all year long.  To visit Bastille on your trip to Grenoble, use our Grenoble online route planner .

  • Took the chairlift up to the Bastille. What a great magnificent fortress. And the views from the top-outstanding. The walk down to the river also provides many unexpected surprises.  more »
  • Raised at fanikulere. I'm afraid of heights and for me it was a test. Rose walk 30 minutes, the good kind. Recommend

  • Went for a refreshing long walk up the mountain with many hairpin bends. The fort has cable car for going up too. Has a cafeteria and toilets and a fantastic view point. Many other attractions accessible from the park such as an old artificial tunnel and a monument for commemorating soldiers. The monument is another trek up to the very top. Views magnificent of Grenoble and the French alps. Many small paths leading into the greenery can be explored while going to the monument.
  • You can either take the cable car to go up there or walk. I would recommend to walk to the top and to take the cable car to go down. The walk can be a bit exhausting but it is worth the view you have over Grenoble and the nature you are encountering on the way. From the top of the mountain, you have an amazing view over the city of Grenoble as well as the surrounding mountains. It is definitely worth a trip.
  • A panoramic view of Grenoble with a good hike to the top of chartreuse hill. Best way to spend your evening
  • I recommend taking the path either up or down and the telepheric the rest of the way. The views of the city down below and the Bastille up above are the best parts.
  • One of the major tourist spot in Grenoble, one that is hard to miss. Spectacular panoramic views of the whole city and the nearby mountains. Don't forget to take a pair of binoculars. The terrace area has lots of information on history of the castle and Grenoble. There is not much to explore in the Castle itself. Some live music and other social events adds to the fun.
