Ile Saint-Honorat, French Riviera - Cote d'Azur
Categories: Islands, Nature & Parks
Situated off the bay of Cannes, Ile Saint-Honorat is an island that has been a place of monastic life ever since the 16th century. Measuring about 1.5 kilometers in length and 400 meters in width, Ile Saint-Honorat currently houses about 30 Cistercian monks. The island has a rich history, despite its very humble appearance. History shows that the island was originally a place of pilgrimage because of the mythological writings of a monk named Raymond Féraud. Around 1635, the Spanish had captured Ile Saint-Honorat and the monks were exiled, only to return two years later when the island had been retaken by the French. Strolling on the island you will find the Abbey, a tower and lots of vegetation. A recommendation: as the island basically run by monks, prompted an appropriate behavior. However, if you find a somewhat hidden Cove, take a bath in the beautiful sea (if you're discreet no one will tell you anything)show original
