Ile Saint-Honorat, French Riviera - Cote d'Azur

(4.7/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Situated off the bay of Cannes, Ile Saint-Honorat is an island that has been a place of monastic life ever since the 16th century. Measuring about 1.5 kilometers in length and 400 meters in width, Ile Saint-Honorat currently houses about 30 Cistercian monks. The island has a rich history, despite its very humble appearance. History shows that the island was originally a place of pilgrimage because of the mythological writings of a monk named Raymond Féraud. Around 1635, the Spanish had captured Ile Saint-Honorat and the monks were exiled, only to return two years later when the island had been retaken by the French. • The island has retained its wild appearance. The cloister is stunning especially in this season or the vegetation is in full bloom. The place is quiet and relaxing. The return by sea Shuttle offers a beautiful panorama of the city of Cannes.

  • Here Mother Nature rubbed the 21 monks living on the island and vice versa. Nice ride, easy and accessible to all. Peace and quiet to the give you. The price of the shuttle out of Cannes is certainly high (16euros by adult) but frankly, it's worth it. On the island all the monuments that can be visited are free (unlike Ste Margherite or pays the Museum of the sea). 1st shuttle from the port of Cannes at 9: 00, last shuttle of St. Honorat 17 h 30. Superb view from the top of the fortified monastery, in 1073.

  • Of our time in Cannes (July 2015), I can honestly say the day we spent on Saint Honorat island was the most impactful and memorable. I'll never forget it. We left our two teen girls (19 & 17) on their...  more »
