Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
Built on a naturally protected site, Chateau de Fougeres is on a rock emerging from a swamp surrounded by a loop of the Nançon river acting as a natural moat. It has three different enclosures that were used for defensive purposes, day-to-day use during peacetime, and for the safety of the population during siege times. Visit the impressive 13 towers, and watch an entertaining live show plunging you into the fortress’s construction during the medieval period. A free booklet at the entrance helps you find your way. • Superb medieval castle, one of the largest in Europe. It is breathtaking. There are many things to see: the different towers with a very informative scenography, the Court, the ruins of the keep, the water mill with 4 wheels, Ford around, Wells etc. The panorama of the walled daughter of ferns is superb at the top of the towers (little thought to the knights who had to climb these very many high steps with all of their equipment!). The visit is also designed for children with an audio guide tailored to them, helmets scattered around knights who enable them, through drawings, to meet a few centuries back... If you have a baby forget the stroller! This isn't a castle we'll find furnished as others, parts being quite empty. However the historical aspect is very impressive. The tour takes about 2 hours. You will be able to stroll nearby to admire the beauty. We went there 2 times, and it is very likely we are back

  • huge Castle: our visit lasted 4 heures(les heures sont passées très vite). I would not recommend a visit if you have a stroller except if we don't climb the towers. There are videos on the very interesting history. I will return with great pleasure

  • This castle is huge, with its many towers and its spacious inner courtyard. The audio guide teaches us a lot of very interesting things about the history of this place and the way age.
