Built on a naturally protected site, Chateau de Fougeres is on a rock emerging from a swamp surrounded by a loop of the Nançon river acting as a natural moat. It has three different enclosures that were used for defensive purposes, day-to-day use during peacetime, and for the safety of the population during siege times. Visit the impressive 13 towers, and watch an entertaining live show plunging you into the fortress’s construction during the medieval period. A free booklet at the entrance helps you find your way. Very beautiful Castle and city. If you have the opportunity to visit don't miss out. It's well worth it!
I enjoyed my day in Fougeres. The city is really nice. It was christmas time and they had lights and music in the main street which was enjoyable. We walk around then visited the castle. It's In good shape with an comprehensive audio-guide. But at some points it started to be too much date and got lost but still.
Stunning place. Lovely walk and cracking views. Nice little train runs around the town in the holidays
Amazingly intact chateau (especially considering they built it in such a strategically unsound place), where you can clamber around inside it and really get a feel for the place. The surrounding area is beautiful, and filled with informative plaques and quotes from famous artists from Fougères. Surprisingly cheap to visit, and if you explore a bit you can really feel like you've stepped back in time.
I loved this castle, because the restoration is not overdone and it keeps it originality in its ruins.Towers along the walls can be climbed to get some beautiful views of the walls and the town in the backdrop.
