Chateau de Fougeres, Fougeres

4.6
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Fougeres
Built on a naturally protected site, Chateau de Fougeres is on a rock emerging from a swamp surrounded by a loop of the Nançon river acting as a natural moat. It has three different enclosures that were used for defensive purposes, day-to-day use during peacetime, and for the safety of the population during siege times. Visit the impressive 13 towers, and watch an entertaining live show plunging you into the fortress’s construction during the medieval period. A free booklet at the entrance helps you find your way. Really the visit to ferns for a decent price. The view is great at the top of the dungeons. Audio guide very convenient and included in the price of admission.

A castle as well, with more surrounded by walls, with many parts are perfectly preserved, with a provision on an inclined ground, I'd never seen him. Fantastic, unique. You're forced to go inside (surcharge, euro 8.50 per person), it's worth it. There is also a lookout to the East of the main entrance if you do not wish to enter, but I recommend the entrance, with the use of the guide with a headset.

Historical heritage of great value in a State of exceptional conservation or renovation. Mill 4-wheel operation, towers, well, walls, moats, everything is in a State that is rarely equal. Professional designs to trace the history of Brittany.

Very pleasantly surprised by this chateau. After 2 weeks of exploring Normandy and Loire this was one of our favorite castles and old towns (although I admit that may be in part because it was one of the first we saw). We felt it was definitely worth paying to go in. They have a self guided audio tour. If you're a history buff, you'll love it -- has tons of info. If you're not quite as into history (like me) it's easy to skip ahead at your own pace. Grounds are lovely and the structure impressive.

Wheelchair access not good. Website makes out there are facilities but there is nothing inside the castle that is accessible other than the courtyards. Disappointed. If you can manage stairs it's a remarkably intact castle and well worth a visit if you want to explore.
