Chateau de Fougeres, Fougeres

(4.6/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Built on a naturally protected site, Chateau de Fougeres is on a rock emerging from a swamp surrounded by a loop of the Nançon river acting as a natural moat. It has three different enclosures that were used for defensive purposes, day-to-day use during peacetime, and for the safety of the population during siege times. Visit the impressive 13 towers, and watch an entertaining live show plunging you into the fortress’s construction during the medieval period. A free booklet at the entrance helps you find your way. • The State of conservation of the Castle... at least what it remains, is spectacular and striking. It's a must visit to do, but which unfortunately is very fast. After understood and appreciated the strategic interest of this atypical location, observed the wheels at dawn, the turn of the ramparts and surveyed the ruins of the old buildings, there's nothing to discover... except for videos with sound enthusiasts who may find their account in the historical evocations presented left. Others, to go outside the fortification, and visit the beautiful church of Saint Sulpice.

  • The castle was constructed in the 12th century by Raoul 11 to replace the wooden fort destroyed by Henry 11 of England in 1166. Much of the history of this castle is tied up with the history of Britta...  more »
  • Very nice castle outside to visit, and a scenography is offered, we have very nice pictures, still an opportunity to delve into the history of France.

  • Spent a whole day here, walking round and checking out the workmanship. I'm always amazed at how they could build such fortifications with such a limited amount of equipment.
  • I loved this place full of history. Great value for money and you can spend a few hours here. However when.it is hot this place does get warm. Beautiful
  • Chateau de Fougeres must be one of the most undervalued place. We actually went there by accident and had a lovely day. We had my 2 nephews aged 2 and 4 with us and I was worried there would not be enough for them to do. They had a ball. You can climb up and on just about every area of the Chateau and the film shows are so informative. I have a chamber d'hote near Mont St Michel and I now tell my guests and the ones who have been all really enjoyed it too. This really is a place not to be missed.
  • Meh. Maybe it was the heat, maybe it was the fact I've seen so many castles before, but I didn't find this site that great. Don't get me wrong, it was worth seeing and the building was impressive, but I didn't spend that long inside and given the large entry fee didn't really think it was great value.
  • One of the biggest castles in western Europe. Impressive views from the towers, lots of puzzles for children, interesting watermill with 4 wheels.
