Chateau de Foix, Foix

(4.1/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
The imposing medieval Chateau de Foix dominates the town from atop a strategic rocky formation. Built in 987 CE and updated in the 15th century, this fortress is well preserved and functions as a museum, featuring collections from the department of Ariège. Sections on prehistoric, Gallo-Roman, and medieval archaeology tell the history of Ariège from ancient times. You can also view exhibits displaying the history of the site and the lives of the Counts at Foix, the most famous of whom was Gaston Fébus, who defied the authority of the king of France by refusing to pay him homage. • The three towers, two are available to explore, stunning views, in addition to the multimedia exhibition on the history of Foix. Good access by train from Toulouse, hour or 2 hours by bus. Great place for a romantic getaway. In the town of tranquility, peace, outside the Castle you can see the beautiful churches.

  • After following the trail of the castle in the pedestrian streets of the city, the access steps stands. Then, once crossed, the history of the countries to Foix reveals these secrets. I recommend the guided tour and the visit in order to understand and enjoy of get places.

  • Nice view but mostly limited to the city. The climb is not too hard, not to do a windy day. The pieces are little furniture. The setting of the Castle seen from Foix is beautiful. Do not forget to circulate in the small alleys that surround the Castle.

  • Amazing place with fabulous views of Foix. Definitely a place to visit if you are in the town. The history of the Castle is also very fascinating and easily conveyed with a number of modern interactive multilingual displays.
  • Not a very large castle but very well restored, with very good exhibits on construction, weapons and arms. Especially appreciated the reproduction of the medieval hunting book!
