Château de Voltaire, Ferney-Voltaire

3.7
#6 of 17 in Historic Sites in Ain
Philosopher Voltaire personally oversaw the construction of every Doric column and Corinthian pilaster at Château de Voltaire. Apparently he liked it well enough to purchase the entire domain of Ferney, now a bustling market town. After Voltaire's death, Catherine the Great of Russia purchased much of his writing. Stop by the castle's library to catch a glimpse of the shelves that once held these works. Access is by guided tour only; most are in French, so check the website for the English-language tour schedule. It's strongly recommended to reserve in advance. • Despite the endless restoration work it was possible to visit part of the garden, very spacious and well maintained. But without having been able to visit the villa remains a garden like others without infamy and without praise. Advice to wait until the end of the work.

  • Castle in renovation and gardens cannot visit because of our dog. So yes it's our fault quotes. so maybe we'll come back one day to see all.

  • Fortunately that the view is superb from the Park of the Castle because the latter is being restored, is not open to the public. The chapel has been beautifully restored, fortunately. And the Orangery is still beautiful. Pity that the cafeteria is closed, a few tables have been installed almost below the scaffolding (thanks noise and dust) and along a wall with a particularly smelly Bush. Indeed, on the one hand the boxwood with their first commission, and the other smell these bushes with their whiff of second commission! We have even if haste what should have been a haven of peace!

  • Historical and a beautiful place to explore.
  • Beautiful grounds to explore.
  • nice place for a historical visit, free to enter.
  • Nice and quiet
  • The chateau is closed for restoration for 3 years. The website says nothing about this. I called the chateau to set up a tour and was given this information...after I bought tickets to Geneva just to see the chateau.
