For a small fee we looked unique for the South of France, built the cloister 12th century architectural canons. The cloister itself and its rare decor is almost not affected by years of war and revolution. Especially remembered carved capitals of columns, all different and unique.

. A magnificent structure rising up on the plain of Roussillon. This is a solid structure, monolithic in appearance. The town of Elne - named after Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine - has at its centre the "Ville Haute " - the High Town. This is built on a huge rocky outcrop that is today invisible under the winding streets and houses bulit up over the centuries. Crowning this is the Cathedral and its Cloisters, with around them an open space from where you can peer down (take care!) into the busy streets below. .

A masterpiece of Roman architecture set in a small village near Perpignan. Beautiful cloister. It was the seat of the former Bishopric of Elne, which was transferred to the Bishopric and cathedral of Perpignan in 1601.

Beautiful edifice of the 11th century. Arches perfectly preserved Romanes. Beautiful contemporary chandeliers that demonstrate that modern art can coexist with the novel provided they are respectful of the site and its codes next to an also Romanesque cloister with magnificent sculptures on the tops of the colonnades.

Cloite (cloister) and Cathedral. Worth it, it's impressive old ... Entrance 4.50. Information available in Dutch. That is pleasant. Free parking by the Maire. With parking disc, but that's not quite sure:-).

The beauty of the capitals of the columns of the cloisters is to discover. Remember to climb above the cloister, by a small staircase, to admire the plain of Roussillon.
