4.7
#5 of 53 in Sightseeing in Aude
Castle Landmark
Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. • Loved the views from this castle was perched high on the mountainside. Bit of a climb to it so not great if you are unsteady on your feet.  more »

  • Stunning views! Rather difficult path uphill, you'll need good walking shoes. Don't let the handicap ramp to the entrance fool you. You need to climb a bit get to the top. It's well worth the climb though.
  • If I put aside significance of Montsegur and it's history this would be the most beautiful castle I ever saw. It's location on the top of the narrow mountain is absolutely amazing and the view over village Cucugnan towards Cháteau de Quéribus is breathtaking. I was at the top when the storm was coming and could see how the dark clouds takes this eagles nest.
  • Absolutely brilliant! Paths and directions could be improved.
  • Loved the view from the top. The path to the castle is easy and worth the visit especially on the fine sunny day
  • Stunning feat of architecture and the views are amazing. Well worth the hike up there.
