Chateau de Peyrepertuse, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse

4.7
Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. • Lots of parking. Toilets & drinks at the ticket office. You can drive most of the way up. The name Peyrepetuse is derived from Occitan, meaning Pierced Rock. The castle was built in the 11th...  more »
  • How did they build castles like this perched on top of mountains? From the top you have 360 degree panoramic views. Worth the admission fee, and you can learn the history of the castle from the...  more »
  • Incredible castle on top of a small 'mountain '. A lot of steps to get to the top but definitely worth it. Very hot so make sure you take drinks with you.  more »

  • Long hike to the fortress, but worth every drop of sweat.
  • A family visiting from Canada, all of us really enjoyed our time climbing up and down this fortress
  • We went high summer, early August, parking is complex up the hill on the bends leading up so beware. The site is magnificent giving some of the best views in the area accessed through a steep and shady climb. There was a falconry display up the top with Golden Eagles! It was busy but well worth it to see as far as the Mediterranean and over the wine region.
  • Well worth the climb! Amazing view from the top. Take your time and make sure you've got proper shoes on.
  • Widely acclaimed to be the one Cathar castle to visit if you only have time for one. Amazing feat of military architecture. Readily evokes the world as it was so many centuries ago.
