Chateau de Peyrepertuse, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse

4.7
Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. • I find the Cathar castles enthralling, especially the way they seem to grow out of the rock - a remote, steep crag seeming to be the requisite position. I hired an audio guide out of curiosity, hoping...  more »
  • Let's go on a regular basis always great views and at the time of medieval is even better. My climb to the Castle takes 20 minutes environ.mettre of good shoes or sneakers

  • In good weather, it is unquestionably a climb to try. This is or the Mont St Michel (less) or the Inca Trail (less steep, shorter and less crowded). It is a place that challenges, regardless of his spiritual convictions. In a world that arises, no doubt rightly, a large number of questions, it is a moment of elevation, in all meanings of the term. For lovers of the images, the effort to transport boxes and objectives will be rewarded.

  • Beautiful views, rich history. Much improved facility since I was there over 20 years ago. The Raptors bird show was a special unexpected treat, with falcons, owls, vultures and even a bald eagle!
  • Awesome views, old fort with several buildings still standing, though no roofs stood the test of time. English audioguide is hard to understand due to echo and le terrible French accent, well... Price was 6.5 EUR for an adult and 4 for audioguide. Accessible only by a rocky trail.
  • To make it to the top of the castle might be for some an endurance feat. The trail to the top is tricky to navigate and I would not wish to use it in wet weather conditions. As ruins of castles go, this one is by no means spectacular, but the setting sure is dramatic.
  • Amazing!! And great with kids but take the GR path to go down (very steep though) if not you may have to wait for a long time for the shuttles to come and pick you up at the end of the visit.
  • Stunning views! Rather difficult path uphill, you'll need good walking shoes. Don't let the handicap ramp to the entrance fool you. You need to climb a bit get to the top. It's well worth the climb though.
