Chateau de Peyrepertuse, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse

4.7
#6 of 37 in Historic Sites in Aude
Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. Children between 4 and 7 years could go without worries. Pushchairs cannot climb. Avoid when it rains it slides a lot.

Fortress with an incredible view of the Cathar country. Access is earned, but widely feasible with children. Point of view-dizzying, with a panoramic view, or taking your eyes. Provide a good pair of shoes, a camera... ATTENTION to young parents, not accessible to strollers.

Visit of the castle during the festival on 9 August, the medieval atmosphere was. The rise in minibus greatly facilitates access to the shop remember but there is still a quarter of an hour on a steep mountainside to reach the ruins. The path is slippery place but offers superb views, however predict good shoes and forget the strollers. Once at the top, the falconry show in the ruins, on a natural terrace on the Valley is magical and very funny thanks to the storyteller who explains the falconry and speaks of his birds with a lot of love and humour. The climb up to the chapel allows us once we get to find out about 360 ° the Pyrenees and Cathar country. On the way down, the Knights camp is great, you can try different pieces of armor or even shooting archery. The fighting with the hits show is impressive and very funny. At the end, to make pictures with the knights who love to talk about their activity and medieval. The village of Duilhac also celebrates during the duration of the festival and offers activities, games and shows. Festival to do, however the price is a bit high if you don't count stay all day (€ 12 per person without student rates). A superb walk through time in a beautiful setting

Beautiful views, rich history. Much improved facility since I was there over 20 years ago. The Raptors bird show was a special unexpected treat, with falcons, owls, vultures and even a bald eagle!

Amazing!! And great with kids but take the GR path to go down (very steep though) if not you may have to wait for a long time for the shuttles to come and pick you up at the end of the visit.

Stunning views! Rather difficult path uphill, you'll need good walking shoes. Don't let the handicap ramp to the entrance fool you. You need to climb a bit get to the top. It's well worth the climb though.

If I put aside significance of Montsegur and it's history this would be the most beautiful castle I ever saw. It's location on the top of the narrow mountain is absolutely amazing and the view over village Cucugnan towards Cháteau de Quéribus is breathtaking. I was at the top when the storm was coming and could see how the dark clouds takes this eagles nest.
