Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. • On a late afternoon we visited Chateau Quéribus and thereafter Chateau de Peyrepertuse. These two castels are easy to combine as they are so close to each other. Both castles give a good impression...

  • This was spectacular - the highlight of our trip. We went with our two young children (just turned 4 and 8 years old), and we all really enjoyed it. The walk up to the chateau was quite manageable.....  more

  • Spent a fab 1 1/2 hours here. Walk to the castle is not for those with mobility issues. Free roam around the ruins. Cooled off in the nearby gorge’s waterfalls as suggested in the guide leaflet.

  • Long hike to the fortress, but worth every drop of sweat.
  • A family visiting from Canada, all of us really enjoyed our time climbing up and down this fortress
  • We went high summer, early August, parking is complex up the hill on the bends leading up so beware. The site is magnificent giving some of the best views in the area accessed through a steep and shady climb. There was a falconry display up the top with Golden Eagles! It was busy but well worth it to see as far as the Mediterranean and over the wine region.
  • Well worth the climb! Amazing view from the top. Take your time and make sure you've got proper shoes on.
  • Widely acclaimed to be the one Cathar castle to visit if you only have time for one. Amazing feat of military architecture. Readily evokes the world as it was so many centuries ago.
