Chateau de Peyrepertuse, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse
(4.7/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. • The ruins of Peyrepertuse is beautifully situated on a hilltop. You need about 15 minutes on a steep path from the car park, walk to the entrance of the Castle. Above you can form of the main parts of the castle still well recognize and enjoy the view. When we were there, there was also three times a day a nice (free) birds of prey show.

  • In the triptych of the Cathar castles, this one is my favorite! Majestic, it offers a panorama breathtaking. He well deserves its nickname of Citadel of Vertigo because it is perched very high... No really easy access to all public however.

  • Much I liked as travel is made and the views are a joy. That Yes, the entry price seemed excessive, and the audio guide (worth to complete the visit). Take advantage of the difficulty of reaching the castle to put prices. Anyway, very nice visit slightly tainted by an abuse of economic ambition. Recommended landscape and history!

  • Fantastic place! You can park below and walk up in 20 minutes. Need good shoes and not always easy, some difficult steps. Very nice views. Came here the 2nd time and it was still fun. The drive there is also fascinating.
  • Very nice castle, lovely location, a great day out. We went for the medieval festival, we had an amazing time!
  • That it's there at all, is staggering enough. The views stretch onwards the Spanish border.
  • A piece of history in an amazing landscape.
  • Quite a steep walk to get to, but well worth it. Lovely views. My brother loved the falconry show
