Chateau de Peyrepertuse, Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse

Chateau de Peyrepertuse is a ruined fortress and one of the five strategically placed Cathar Castles built along the border between France and Spain. Construction began in the 11th century and continued through the 13th century, taking advantage of a high, defensive crag of rock that overlooks the approach road. Look up at the castle from the road, and you'll find it difficult to distinguish the castle from the surrounding rock. It has been on the French Ministry of Culture's Monuments Historiques list since 1908. • Straight uphill and a slippery, rocky climb.....but wow! Castle ruins to get lost in. Cathar history. We were like kids in a candy store. Most beautiful views ever!  more »
  • Very nice, place, far from civilization, silent castle, fascinating panorama. The only problem can be with an accessibility if mountain path is diffcult for you.  more »
  • Only the road that leads to the Castle visit is worth. We went in late September and autumn began to provide a colorful foliage that was a feast for the eyes. Colors yellow, red, Orange and ochre was accompanied by the road to the Castle. One ascend in the car and suddenly sees in the distance and held high the silhouette of the castle: impressive! Gives the feeling that it will be impossible to get up there and it is difficult to imagine what it must have been living there in the middle ages the road leading to the parking lot, then to the ticket office and then entering a thin trail that is rising up to the Castle. The ascent takes about 20 minutes. Reach the ruins of this castle and visit them is transported to the past, unable to understand the life in that place. The views are wonderful. The day of our visit was rainy, there was enough security to scroll on the floor slippery and barroso. However, we take this visit reaching the high wing, facing the fine rain and mist which verán what in the past would be serious difficulties to live there. I do not advise to rent audio guide, does not provide any interesting data and the device is extremely uncomfortable to move around the place

  • Beautiful views, rich history. Much improved facility since I was there over 20 years ago. The Raptors bird show was a special unexpected treat, with falcons, owls, vultures and even a bald eagle!
  • Awesome views, old fort with several buildings still standing, though no roofs stood the test of time. English audioguide is hard to understand due to echo and le terrible French accent, well... Price was 6.5 EUR for an adult and 4 for audioguide. Accessible only by a rocky trail.
  • To make it to the top of the castle might be for some an endurance feat. The trail to the top is tricky to navigate and I would not wish to use it in wet weather conditions. As ruins of castles go, this one is by no means spectacular, but the setting sure is dramatic.
  • Amazing!! And great with kids but take the GR path to go down (very steep though) if not you may have to wait for a long time for the shuttles to come and pick you up at the end of the visit.
  • Stunning views! Rather difficult path uphill, you'll need good walking shoes. Don't let the handicap ramp to the entrance fool you. You need to climb a bit get to the top. It's well worth the climb though.
