Basilique St-Sauveur, Dinan

4.5
#3 of 19 in Things to do in Dinan
Architectural Building Religious Site
One of the rare examples of Romanesque architecture in Brittany, Basilique St-Sauveur is a Roman Catholic basilica whose construction was begun in the early 12th century. The imagination of men returning from the Crusades comes alive with beasts including gargoyles carved from marble on exterior columns. Keep an eye out for exotic animals discovered during the Crusades, such as lions and parrots adorning the arches as well as demons tormenting sinners. Be sure to look at the famous 14th century tombstone in the north transept of the famous knight also known as the "Constable of France," Bertrand Du Guesclin. • St. Saviour was founded in the early 12th century, and the first mention of it belongs to the year 1123. Over its long history many times rebuilt, but was never completed. In its architecture combined several styles-Romanesque, Gothic, classical and Baroque. Every century has made changes to the appearance of the Church. Its history is linked to the first crusade, when the Knight Rivalon Le Roux (Rivalon Le Roux), born in Dinan, went to Palestine. In battle with the Saracens he vowed to build a temple in the name of the Savior, if he sees his native city. Returning to Dinan, he fulfilled a vow and donated funds for the construction of the Church. In 1480 the Western facade of the Church was rebuilt in the Gothic style. In the 17th century, completed the construction of the Bell Tower. During the French Revolution, the Church was used for hay storage. The newly opened to parishioners in the year 1800. In 1810 here put the heart of the hundred years ' war Commander Bertrand du Gesklena (Bertrand Du Guesclin). Interestingly, the city's Cathedral, and the Church actually performs its function.

  • Like so many others in the area, fantastic. A delight. It is curious how originality can occur when it is being built in the same style. And it is given. And each building leads you different emotions... When you think that nothing new will already find... and going and find it.
