  • This is the Vauban Fort on the Left Bank that was part of the defensive works to protect the Gironde Estuary. It is in pretty sad state. People quarried the stone and brick for building materials for ...  more »
  • The Estuary Lock has been on the Unesco World Heritage List since 2008 along with 11 other fortified sites that are part of the network of major sites in Vauban. The latter has made no less than 160 fortified structures. Fort Médoc, with an area of 25 hectares, is considered a Vauban defensive tryptic project. The project's effectiveness was based on three strategic locations to defend Europe's largest estuary from military river attacks. As this sea route had suffered several conflicts even in the Middle Ages, the access route had to be controlled. This is why Louis XIV, the Sun King asked Vauban to improve the defence for this sea passage. Vauban's plan was to develop a tryptic project to cover the 3 km width of the estuary between Blaye on the right bank, Fort Pâté located on an island in the center and Fort Medoc on the left bank. Thus was created the Vauban Lock, that is, the Citadel of Blaye, the Fort Pâté and the fortification of Fort Médoc on the left bank. Construction of Fort Médoc began in 1691 and was completed in 1694. Since 2008, Fort Médoc has been listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site for the recognition of Vauban's outstanding work. At Fort Médoc, you can see the ramparts, several buildings such as the powder keg and the heavy royal door at the entrance with its pediment adorned with the royal sun, emblem of King Louis XIV. Vauban chose this place because the terrain was sandy and it was surrounded by wet meadows submerged during high tides. In addition, this islet was separated from the mainland by flood pits. He had found the perfect place to build his fort. We took part in the "Castles and Terroirs: Medoc" tour on September 26, 2018. This excursion was offered by the Bordeaux Tourist Office. The package included a visit to Château Malescasse, a short stop at Fort Medoc and a cruise on the Garonne.
