Les Calanche Cliffs, Corsica

(4.9/5 based on 460 reviews on the web)
Vivid pink and orange rocky masses and pinnacles crumble into the blue sea composing Les Calanche Cliffs. Unusual erosion patterns form the rocks and porphyry needles, some of which soar 300 m (980 ft) above the waves. Strange patterns emerge from the constant water and wind erosion forming different figures and animals, the most famous of which is at the north end called the "Tête de Chien" (Dog's Head). Other creatures, include a Moor's head, a bishop, a bear, and a tortoise.

The ancient Cosquer cave that is part of the cliffs is a grotto that is 37 m (120 ft) underwater was once inhabited during the Paleolithic era, when the sea level was much lower than today. Its walls are covered with paintings and engravings dating back to between 27,000 and 19,000 BCE and depicting many terrestrial animals, such as bison, ibex, and horses, as well as sea mammals like seals. • It is simply for me, the most beautiful place in Corsica, and IE, as Corsica is filled with more beautiful place and views than the other one! But the creeks of Piana, what wonder, what beauty, it's amazing to be amazed at this point at each turn, each re-coint, this site is beautiful, the light and the sun make a different show every hour flowing. The sunset background in the sea between two creeks is to make you cry, it's simple everytime I go there I feel the same emotion as the first time, I'll stay hours to contemplate them...

  • The coves are protected = flora, fauna. Prohibition of hunting-sousmarine, magre clear water. You have the right to look at the funds with a mask. Not allowed to berth or to anchor if you are on a boat. You find caves at the level of the sea, and there is even an opening in the cliff that looks like the map of Corsica. The cliffs are red and suddenly gray = millions of years separate them. From Ajaccio and Porticcio, motorboats pouir tourists bring you see coves them. It takes the day. It's really to see.

  • We visited the piana Calanches by sea with one of the many boat tours that depart from Porto Ota, and it was well worth it. These rock formations are very unique, varied and fascinating with their typical red color. Go to Corsica without seeing it is really a shame. Only caveat: these tours are on crowded boats almost as much as a bus in rush hour, with screaming children and so on ... better spend a little more and to book a trip on smaller boats and with less capacity (to much of Porto Ota there is a wide choice): do you definitely in peace and you will enjoy better these landscapes.
