Castle Tourist Spot
The Château de Commarin in the commune of Commarin in the Côte-d'Or département, Burgundy, France, has passed through 26 generations in the same family; never sold, though it has often passed through heiresses, Commarin today is a seat of the comte de Vogüé. It has been classed a Monument Historique since 1949.Though the site probably has its origins in a Gallo-Roman villa, Commarin is first mentioned, as a maison forte, in a document of 1214. Its seigneurs were a cadet branch of the seigneurs of Sombernon, from the lineage of the first Dukes of Burgundy. In 1346 Jean and his son Jacques de Cortiamble, chamberlain to Philip the Bold, duke of Burgundy, rebuilt Commarin as a fortified seat; the size and disposition of this moated stronghold established the placement and size of the future rebuildings. The two cylindrical towers with conical roofs date from this rebuilding, and the vaulted chapel. Commarin passed to Agnès de Cortiamble, the elder daughter of Jacques, who brought it as part of her dowry to Jean de Dinteville, seigneur des Chenets. In the 16th century, Commarin underwent radical transformations to render it a modern habitation. The chapel in the east wing was redecorated with sculptures and a terra cotta tomb. A series of heraldic tapestries woven ca 1515-22, in which family armorials of the Dinteville-Pontailler alternate with alchemical symbols remain in the house. A triptych was executed in 1526, with portraits of Girard de Vienne and his lady.

  • We were conducted on a fascinating tour of this wonderful property by an English speaking guide , a descendant of the family who have lived here for 600 years!. The tapestries particularly are amazing...  more »
  • I first want to evacuate a topic of annoyance: the quality of the guide (blonde) is not equal to the place and rate. We're right to be demanding with the only way to visit the Interior of the castle which is the guided tour, namely learn things that are not what they might hear in any other Castle. Anyway, I modestly recommend him to read the great book of Françoise Vignier about castles in Burgundian lands, it will be certainly built. For those who are in doubt, this castle is very interesting: beyond its beautiful architecture, he has known stability in its family transmission, and has escaped many torments: there are many rooms, furnished in authentic condition. A highlight: the decoration without equivalent in Burgundy of the stairwell with magnificent plasterwork of the 17th. See also beautiful esoteric tapestries (nothing to do with Alchemy so the guide spoke...).

  • Owned by the same family for 900 years (the 26th generation currently), this castle was originally a Roman villa and a strong House converted to a castle in the 14th century, when the power of the Dukes of Burgundy. He is transformed into a residence for approval in the 17th century and its current furnishings and decorations date from the 16th and 18th centuries. Built on stilts, it is surrounded by broad moats extended to two parts of water in a large English park. It is a historical monument since 1949. The tour starts by the stables then the chapel of the 14th century. Visit then some parts of the castle that is still inhabited. I noticed a superb collection of heraldic tapestries and Alchemy in the 16th century (Family Crest tiles alternate with symbolic motifs tiles). This castle is magnificent and his very interesting visit.
