Le Fort Saint Elme, Collioure
(4.4/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Le Fort Saint Elme is a sturdy fortress of revolutionary architecture, designed to be effective against artillery and conventional assault. Notice that the walls are made extra thick to absorb artillery fire. Other design aspects make it difficult for troops to scale or otherwise breach the exterior. Like many French fortresses, it was designed to defend the Spanish border during the Thirty Years War. Centuries of conflict have made their mark on this fortress, including some buildings that were destroyed when the German navy occupied the area during World War II. Visit the museum to explore a full arsenal with armor, swords, shields, spears, firearms, and other artifacts, mostly from the Renaissance. Put Le Fort Saint Elme at the forefront of your travel plans using our Collioure travel itinerary planner.

  • We seemed to be on a reserve to the goats rather than trail on a road for automobiles! No doubt is a good policy to deter tourists to use their vehicles to visit this fort from where the name "strategic road". Gentlemen elected ladies and gentlemen ladies of the DDE, please try to ensure that access to buildings historical witnesses of your region remain accessible to as many people as possible including people with disabilities, seniors and all others without damage to their vehicles. Visit historically very interesting, collection of arms, impressive armor, weather is amazing panoramic views. Not to be missed!

  • It's a very unique star-shaped fortification; the conservation status is admirable, it is a unique piece. The visit was made for Halloween, and a group of young people had decorated the castle with allegorical motifs to the night of all saints, with much grace and will, is grateful for the dedication. They were also very friendly. The views of COLLIOURE from the Fort are fantastic, unbeatable.

  • View a fort very well restored Halloween activities for kids a good pleasant morning in full sun with a 360 degree view. However the road a disaster would have when even the municipality of Collioure a very little effort. Gentlemen politicians you have a great site made so that tourists can access correctly without breaking their car

  • Very nicely restored fortress with extensive and well-displayed medieval armaments, tools of combat. Good historical information posted. 360 degree views of the Mediterranean and Pyrenees from atop the fortress.
  • The views of Collioure from up here is lovely. I drove the car up a very narrow and windy single track as it was a last minute evening thing to do.
  • Worth the walk up the hill for the incredible views
  • Disguise (sword and shield) for children (2 years and 4 years) and staff. The visit is done in 45 minutes with many Knights armor, medieval weapons. The view is superb. It's really a very nice family visit.
