Le Fort Saint Elme, Collioure

Categories: Historic Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web
Le Fort Saint Elme is a sturdy fortress of revolutionary architecture, designed to be effective against artillery and conventional assault. Notice that the walls are made extra thick to absorb artillery fire. Other design aspects make it difficult for troops to scale or otherwise breach the exterior. Like many French fortresses, it was designed to defend the Spanish border during the Thirty Years War. Centuries of conflict have made their mark on this fortress, including some buildings that were destroyed when the German navy occupied the area during World War II. Visit the museum to explore a full arsenal with armor, swords, shields, spears, firearms, and other artifacts, mostly from the Renaissance. • Admittedly, the Fort is neither particularly large nor particularly exciting. Children like it because there are many viewpoints and the round inner area is really nice. We were in October there and have many to the stay unfortunately not full use of a landing places outdoors. However, the short climb of about half an hour is really terrific. You go between Dominican cellar and Museum of modern art up to the mill and then left on the way to the Fort. Stable/thicker sole sport shoes are advisable. The path is Rocky and short at the end a little more difficult. For the short stairway to the mill is super nice and during the ascent you will be rewarded with a magnificent view over the place. That you should really not miss, if you go to a few meters.

  • Very nice location, unbeatable view, beautiful fully renovated building. The Côte vermeille is magnificent. The Interior is less interesting y'a of reading but is not super clear on the history of the fort over the centuries...
