Le Fort Saint Elme, Collioure

(4.4/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Le Fort Saint Elme is a sturdy fortress of revolutionary architecture, designed to be effective against artillery and conventional assault. Notice that the walls are made extra thick to absorb artillery fire. Other design aspects make it difficult for troops to scale or otherwise breach the exterior. Like many French fortresses, it was designed to defend the Spanish border during the Thirty Years War. Centuries of conflict have made their mark on this fortress, including some buildings that were destroyed when the German navy occupied the area during World War II. Visit the museum to explore a full arsenal with armor, swords, shields, spears, firearms, and other artifacts, mostly from the Renaissance. Put Le Fort Saint Elme at the forefront of your travel plans using our Collioure travel itinerary planner.

  • This place is extraordinary, but the hike up to the fort is incredible; the views overlooking Collioure and the harbor are the best!
  • Occupying a strategic military location (network of lookouts) on a ridge line overlooking Collioure, fort St. Elmo is omnipresent in the Vermeille coast landscape. So there is nothing surprising about the important role of this location in the complex history of the region (occupation by the Moors, kingdoms of Mallorca, Aragon and France under Louis XI), before even its construction between 1538 and 1552 under the reign of Charles Quint. He will retain his military duties (fortification system improved by Vauban, attack of the general Dugommier in 1794 during the French revolution and occupation during the second world war) until 2008, where fort St. Elmo has been converted into a museum with a collection of arms and armor from the 16th to the 19th century as well as several historical documents (v.g. genealogy of Charles Quint) not to mention the magnificent panorama from the terrace. Suggested package (10,5e) combining the rise in small train through the departure of Collioure vineyard followed by the visit to the Museum and walk back to Collioure along the trail of the mill (20 minutes).

  • Very nicely restored fortress with extensive and well-displayed medieval armaments, tools of combat. Good historical information posted. 360 degree views of the Mediterranean and Pyrenees from atop the fortress.
  • The views of Collioure from up here is lovely. I drove the car up a very narrow and windy single track as it was a last minute evening thing to do.
  • Worth the walk up the hill for the incredible views
  • Disguise (sword and shield) for children (2 years and 4 years) and staff. The visit is done in 45 minutes with many Knights armor, medieval weapons. The view is superb. It's really a very nice family visit.
