Fort Saint-Elme, Collioure

4.5
Fort Saint-Elme is a sturdy fortress of revolutionary architecture, designed to be effective against artillery and conventional assault. Notice that the walls are made extra thick to absorb artillery fire. Other design aspects make it difficult for troops to scale or otherwise breach the exterior. Like many French fortresses, it was designed to defend the Spanish border during the Thirty Years War. Centuries of conflict have made their mark on this fortress, including some buildings that were destroyed when the German navy occupied the area during World War II. Visit the museum to explore a full arsenal with armor, swords, shields, spears, firearms, and other artifacts, mostly from the Renaissance. • We loved our tour of the Fort. Very friendly staff. An impressive building and terraces with a splendid view on the vermeille coast and on the Roussillon coast. The Museum is well done with lots of activities for children.

  • We got a map from the tourist office ( next to the cafes on the beach). From here we walked around the beach and took the road to the Musee d'art Moderne. Go up Impasse du Musee and you can climb the ...  more »
  • Access possible with the little train but for walkers, access by the steep path through the mill is a great moment. The view of Collioure, port... constantly changes and pictures follow one another. The Fort is private and the visit on Saturday is to be avoided before the marriages that privatize the place where we are denied access. Damage after paying his entry.

  • Nice place to visit! It has been renovated and they propose a lot of games for kids. Really worth it to go there by walk from Collioure, you will get impressive view on the sea and surrounding. The view / landscape from top of the castle is undeniably the best you can get on the village of Collioure and surrounding.
  • Beautiful view over the area. Good for kids and enough information for adults. On the outside there is much but inside the fort there is not much to see.
  • Amazing views of Colliure, the coast and the hill. Toddlers love it, they can borrow knight costumes and soft play swords.
  • Wonderful panoramic view of the towns on both sides of the hill!
  • Review is for hike to the Fort. Absolutely breathtaking views, each better than the last as you clime the hill. Not terribly difficult, but not a paved road. Provides some of the best views available (that I found) for Collioure and the surrounding area.
