Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer

4.9
Normandy American Cemetery honors American soldiers who died in Europe during World War II. Most of the 9,387 graves contain the remains of American soldiers and military personnel who lost their lives during the D-Day landings and the operations that followed. East of the memorial, the semicircle garden has 1,557 names inscribed on the "Walls of the Missing,” with rosettes denoting the names of those who have since been identified. The semicircular colonnade has one loggia at each end containing narratives of military operations as well as huge maps. See the iconic bronze statue called the “Spirit of American Youth” in its center and, overlooking the beach, a tablet depicting the Normandy landings. • This is a very sombre and sobering place but is an absolute must-visit. The feeling as you stand and gaze at the sheer number of graves (9,388) in the cemetery is almost overwhelming and is certainly very emotional. The whole site is immaculately kept and is simply beautiful. There are lots of walking tours and a lot of people visiting so it can be quite noisy - bear this in mind for your visit, as it is not a place for silent reflection. It really brings home that these were important individuals with lives, families and journeys - these lives are true cost of war, a message more relevant than ever.
  • Strong place. Everyone should visit. And do his best to avoid repeating what happened here. So many lives... Guys, we will never forget!
  • Spectacular and somber. Well done. We spent 3 fascinating hours in the visitor center and walking the grounds. We could have stayed longer. Take the free tours in English or French. Well worth while! Bring your kids, it's better than any history class.
  • Very impressive and sobering! The cemetery is spread over 172 acres and contains almost 10 thousands burials. The white marble crosses on the deep green grass and the dark blue of the ocean make this place unique and memorable. Amazing place.
  • Honor the fallen through reverence and your time. It is a very large place, along with an updated museum style introduction to the WWII landings and it’s cost. We owe it to past and future generations to visit this solemn resting place. Not to be missed, and never to be forgotten....
