Big Red One Assault Museum, Colleville-sur-Mer
(3.7/5 based on 75+ reviews on the web)
For a dose of interesting history, head over to Big Red One Assault Museum in Normandy, a site dedicated to the efforts of the US First Infantry Division, nicknamed the Big Red One, and particularly their part in the D-Day Landings on June 6, 1944. The museum includes a number of displays and activities. Watch a fascinating film that chronicles the events of the assault, or you can also go on an hour-long guided tour in either French or English.

The Big Red One division was part of the infamous landing at Omaha Beach where, despite the difficulties encountered, they together with the 29th division went on to secure the areas around Saint-Laurent, Vierville, and Colleville. • Fantastic little Museum (by size) which is full of locally sourced parts. the Museum is run by a true enthusiast that in this day of low crowds made me share the history of some of these pieces. What happiness!

  • We visited the week last with friends, and I recommend it to you! End of the visit of this small not very interesting Museum supposed to highlight the courage of American soldiers from free Europe, what a disappointment to find prominently in the window of the shop the book Mein Kampf sold 350 euros... In short no comments so much hypocrisy insulting to the memory of the soldiers who died heroically in battle.

  • I found this museum very interesting and respectful of the brave American soldiers of the Big Red One division until I ended up the visit at the boutique. I found there in the window a collection edit...  more »

  • Very detailed, well worth the admission
  • Small but well worth a look. It is specific to one particular American Division's participation in Operation Overlord.
  • Very small museum, spend half an hour here.
  • Hello!! This is today 6 years I has been camping in the regions, and I did all museums in the regions and this makes 6 years that I pass this museum is in even visit it because of the Visual prejudices! It is true that the Museum seems small seen from the outside, is this year have made the big move! And get back to future customers in their say don't hesitate inside everything is authentic and wonderfully well explained and present, the person who would like this Museum and polite rarely seen in some Museum and a very big fan! This man and always looking for something new to renew where always improve are Museum and I take my hat off to him because he did a tremendous job! I'll give you an example I'd rather make a small museum like this one to make the memorial of Caen because at the Caen memorial I have a big doubt about the authenticity of objects! PS: the Museum didn't really dear!

  • Beautiful tribute to the 1st U.S. division which opened the ball if we can tell and has always been in 1st line during the fighting. The place is not very large compared to the price of entry, but well presented.
