American Cemetery & Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer

4.9
American Cemetery & Memorial honors American soldiers who died in Europe during World War II. Most of the 9,387 graves contain the remains of American soldiers and military personnel who lost their lives during the D-Day landings and the operations that followed. East of the memorial, the semicircle garden has 1,557 names inscribed on the "Walls of the Missing,” with rosettes denoting the names of those who have since been identified. The semicircular colonnade has one loggia at each end containing narratives of military operations as well as huge maps. See the iconic bronze statue called the “Spirit of American Youth” in its center and, overlooking the beach, a tablet depicting the Normandy landings. • A place full of emotions. Perfectly maintained. Impressive by the colossal number of graves of immaculate white. The chapel ceiling is majestic and the soothing aisles offer an unobstructed view of Omaha Beach.

  • Such a respectful presence of glory and mourning alike. Everything is tended to with such care and precision. Immaculate landscaping and maintenance for the paths, monuments, gravestones, and flora. Visitor center and bathrooms were being renovated so were not able to visit those (May '19).
  • It is an overwhelming experience, far from Paris but absolutely worthwhile; beholding the endless rows of tombs is a breathtaking feeling, the silence is estrange. Visiting this place is a unique experience, though I felt that death could be breathed, peace is in the air. Perfect for near history enthusiasts, every single detail is in perfect condition, if one has the opportunity, should not miss it definitively. On the other hand, there are some small restaurants in the nearby but good options, next to Omaha beach.
  • Exceptionally good cemetery and memorial. The museum is very informative with various displays about the Second World War, D-Day and the soldiers who gave their lives here. This is the place where the soldiers who inspired the movie "Saving Private Ryan" are buried. The cemetery grounds are well maintained and spotless. Typically, people spend about 1-2 hours on these grounds. Definitely worth a visit. There are several restrooms near near the parking lot and plenty of parking for cars, buses etc.
  • I wish more Americans had the opportunity to experience a tour around Normandy. It’s truly gut wrenching to learn about the impact WWII had on the region and just how many lives were affected on June 6th, 1944. This world could look a whole lot different if all of soldiers at the American Cemetery didn’t give the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Thank you for taking us to this monumental location to play golf!
  • Very moving cemetery and memorial. The museum is very informative with displays about the war, D-Day and the soldiers who served. The brothers who inspired the movie Saving Private Ryan are buried here. The cemetery grounds are well maintained. We spent about 90 minutes here exploring the grounds and reflecting on the soldiers' sacrifice. There are restrooms near the parking lot and plenty of parking. There is an access road down to the beaches near the exit.
