The medieval Gothic cathedral, Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, was built in the 13th century entirely from black lava stone making it highly distinctive and visible from great distances. A step inside reveals beautiful medieval stained glass windows, many Gothic frescoes, and a crypt from the 10th century with two remarkable sarcophagi from the 4th and 5th centuries. Striking architectural features, include its 96.2 m (315 ft) tall twin spires and the blue rose and the orange stained glass windows made in the 14th century above the ambulatory chapels.   • A unique cathedrale! So elegant! You can go inside and see all the wonderful designs on the windows and walls. Also the floor. It was one of the highlights in my trip to France.  more »

  • I like it very much because it's different, completely dark because It is built entirely in black lava stone, which makes it highly distinctive, and visible from a great distance. Its twin spires are 108 meters tall, and tower above the town's rooftops. Definitely worth a visit if you're around. You can also climb up the tower which might be a little exhausting but rewarding. Check my photos to have an idea of the view you might expect. The view from the top is simple remarkable.

  • Made of volcanic rock. It's pretty. Very similar looking to the cathedral in Rouen.
