The medieval Gothic cathedral, Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption, was built in the 13th century entirely from black lava stone making it highly distinctive and visible from great distances. A step inside reveals beautiful medieval stained glass windows, many Gothic frescoes, and a crypt from the 10th century with two remarkable sarcophagi from the 4th and 5th centuries. Striking architectural features, include its 96.2 m (315 ft) tall twin spires and the blue rose and the orange stained glass windows made in the 14th century above the ambulatory chapels.   • Yes, the Cathedral of Clermont is black because it is lava (normal we are in a region of volcanoes)... it is unique of its kind. She is majestic, I hope you have the chance to attend a concert or at a mass on Sunday morning. Don't say she is dirty because it irritates the auvergnats...

  • Made of volcanic rock. It's pretty. Very similar looking to the cathedral in Rouen.
