Liberation Museum (Musee de la Liberation), Cherbourg-Octeville
(3.7/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
A fascinating military museum, Liberation Museum (Musee de la Liberation) is dedicated to the Ordre de la Libération, France's second national order after the Légion d'honneur, which was created in 1940 by General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces. At this site, you can enjoy three galleries and six rooms of displays documenting the history of the Free French Forces, de Gaulle's manuscripts, resistance activities, and the concentration camps.

You might find the precious artifacts displayed especially interesting. Showcases contain more than 4,000 objects such as uniforms, weapons, clandestine press and leaflets, transmitters, flags taken to the enemy on the battlefields of Africa and Europe, the first naval flags of Free France, and relics from the camps. The hall of honor is dedicated to General de Gaulle. • IT is free on Wednesdays so we got there free. Even so other days the charge is small and I would say it is worth it. The view over cherbourg is wonderful and the road up to it an experience. Overall ...  more »
  • Very nice with the possibility very convenient to leave our bags at the entrance as we were charged. The course in the Museum is very well built, with a side of immersive with soundtracks, evocative sets, the brief but informative explanatory texts and objects in the windows, witnesses physical reality of history. We are not bored and the course is done in 2 hours. And there is also a very nice view on the roadstead of Cherbourg from the Museum.

  • We visited the Museum of the fort of the rolls in September. You can park up to 100 m from the Museum. Here you get a great view of Cherbourg and the region. The visit to the Museum takes in about 1 1/2 hours at 2: 00. A lot of photos, movies, models various objects and panels. To do.
