Liberation Museum (Musee de la Liberation), Cherbourg-Octeville
(3.7/5 based on 110+ reviews on the web)
A fascinating military museum, Liberation Museum (Musee de la Liberation) is dedicated to the Ordre de la Libération, France's second national order after the Légion d'honneur, which was created in 1940 by General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces. At this site, you can enjoy three galleries and six rooms of displays documenting the history of the Free French Forces, de Gaulle's manuscripts, resistance activities, and the concentration camps.

You might find the precious artifacts displayed especially interesting. Showcases contain more than 4,000 objects such as uniforms, weapons, clandestine press and leaflets, transmitters, flags taken to the enemy on the battlefields of Africa and Europe, the first naval flags of Free France, and relics from the camps. The hall of honor is dedicated to General de Gaulle. • We went to visit the Museum of the Resistance after climbing to feet the ascent of the resistance. This small museum brings an interesting light on the second world war and the Liberation in Cherbourg and its environs. The tour is interesting, with a lot of documentation. A pity that there has not been temporary exhibition in the last room, but we distributed are pleased with our visit! NB: the view of Cherbourg is worth a visit!

  • I visit this Museum since my childhood and I see wither years. I take, so far, my girls to make them discover a part of our heritage, our history of Cherbourg and, what was my disappointment. Entry, the museum looks bad, it seems not interested in the services of the city of Cherbourg which operates it. (slats of floor broken, dirty walls, paintings eroded from the home..) a little tour of the maintenance probably wouldn't hurt. Once inside, the building is no more maintained, and it seems to bleed out his already thin collection over the years also (the last room before the release, is also empty). They are a few interesting pieces, but we are mostly reading, photos and posters of era. What a waste to see an iconic building of the liberation of Cherbourg, to see if bad exploit, and little highlighted, knowing the number of collection and object found on Cherbourg after the war. Location is very good, we welcome you with a smile, and the staff is listening to the many questions you may have. The price is very attractive, €8 (2 adults/2 children), which makes its greatest asset... In summary, this museum wait to regain the appearance of these years the most beautiful...
