Cherbourg - since its founding site of European history, witnessed by this Basilica. After the evangelization of Cherbourg by Saint Éreptiole, the basilica was built around 435 ad, destroyed by the Normans in the 9th century and rebuilt in the 11th century. After severe damage in the hundred years war with the English, the French built the Basilica in the 15th century again. Last damaged again during the French Revolution and rebuilt, the Basilica survived one of the most difficult fighting the allied with the Germans in the second world war. This story is to read off the special architecture of the Basilica: a Romanesque nave, supported by two high Gothic Exonarthex with beautiful rose Windows from fish bladder. The Interior is home to rare relics of centuries: in the southern Nebenschiff, an artfully crafted wooden baptismal font from the construction time of the Basilica can be found near the entrance. The wooden icon of St. Anna is something towards the altar, wearing the Maria on the arm, which in turn carries the infant Jesus in her arms, by the early Christian origin of the Basilica. The altar in the choir revealed a further rarity: the representation of the baptism of Jesus by John (Jean le Baptiste), sends while God his commitment to Jesus and his love for mankind in the form of a dove. Jesus, John and God are in the triangle (Trinity) each, symbolizes with God at the top of a Sun with Hebrew inscription. The altar is semi-open to the top, so that the daylight illumines the scene in the truest sense of the word. In the Centre, the crossing, are representations of the hundred years war in Alabaster (15th century). The gaze moves over the intense red coloured mosaic stained glass Windows to the finely crafted wooden pulpit up to the balustrade of the central nave with its representation of "la danse macabre" (dance of death): figure a Bishop, a nobleman, farmers or beggars, each with the death to his page - regardless of status and wealth death brings everyone. As a starting point of a D day trips or as compressed sample of europäoischer history of this Basilica is recommended also non-religious. And to the nice ladies and gentlemen in the background, make sure that give any effort, to show the beauty of this Basilica the interested.
