église St Pierre, Chartres

4.0
#6 of 19 in Things to do in Chartres
Landmark Tourist Spot
The Gothic medieval church, église St Pierre, has glorious medieval stained glass from the 14th century, a time that has very little representation in windows. Next to the choir, one of the windows representing the Old Testament is among the oldest stained glass dating back to the late 13th century.

This has been a religious site going back to before the ninth century, but the Norman invasions destroyed the original structures, except the dungeon. Rebuilt in 1320, recent archaeological digs have uncovered older tombs. This quiet church is not very touristy, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful moment listening to the organists who play most every day. • Beauuuuutiful!
  • This is an old abbey church , near the river in Chartres, There are some lovely stained glass windows. There is an archeological area where some tombs were unearthed. The flying buttresses are just asking to be photographed. A neat stop when walking around Chartres.
  • A church with a history. Although it seems abandoned, worth taking a few minutes and see the stained glass, the floor, the height of the ship.
