Tunnel du Mont-Blanc, Chamonix

3.0
The Mont Blanc Tunnel is a highway tunnel in Europe, under the Mont Blanc mountain in the Alps. It links Chamonix, Haute-Savoie, France with Courmayeur, Aosta Valley, Italy, via European route E25. The passageway is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes, particularly for Italy, which relies on this tunnel for transporting as much as one-third of its freight to northern Europe. It reduces the route from France to Turin by 50km and to Milan by 100km. Northeast of Mont Blanc's summit, the tunnel is about 15km southwest of the tripoint with Switzerland, near Mont Dolent.
Begun in 1957 and completed in 1965, the tunnel is 11.611km in length, 8.6m in width, and 4.35m in height. The passageway is not horizontal, but in a slightly inverted "V", which assists ventilation. The entrance elevation on the French side is 1274m and 1381m in Italy, with a maximum of 1395m near the center, a maximum difference of 121m. The tunnel consists of a single gallery with a two-lane dual direction road. At the time of its construction, it tripled the length of any existing highway tunnel.

  • The passage and become indispensable since the accident. The price to access in the tunnel and very expensive, but time saving and obvious.

  • Great pizza and really great locally brewed beer but their Diavalo pasta or as we New Yawkers call it Fradiavalo sauce is the best I've ever had. NOTE: I'm 6'5" and the 2nd floor ceiling is only 6'. S...  more »
  • The Only short way from Italy to France and beyond. Passed in March 2019-with the beginning about half an hour stood in a queue (let cars with a distance of 100-150 meters) Tunnel 13 km and we paid for AUDI-46.50 Euro one way.... where you're going.

  • Always a joy going via the Blanc but remember the strict policies on health and safety as you will attract a fine for speeding for being too close to vehicle in front if you disobey the strict rules as the speed limit is a max of 70 kph and the least distance between you and the vehicle in front is a min of 150 metres but you can judge the distance using the blue lights mounted on the wall inside the tunnel
  • Drove through the tunnel when travelling last year (18) The views in and around the tunnel are fantastic
  • Got to give the tunnell mont blank a 1 star. How many year now in operation and not a single hint of customer focus. Staff miserable surly and shut the window instead of helping with your question. I bought a 10 trip card 5 years ago that ran out in 3 years - same tunnel same price so WHY!! So I bought another 10 pads. However I still have to que with every one else what a stupid ill thought out arrangement. 1 return trip in the tunnel is a ludicrous price feeding off the tourists. But if I buy a 10 trip card with a chip and barcode why do I need to wait in a she with everyone else who is buying a 1 trip ticket, Dropping their credit cards, having a chat with the unhelpful staff that's all a mystery to me. Fix it 50 years on with a priority lane , do away with unhelpful staff or retrain them to not think of it as their pension. But as a service they fulfil for paying customers. Lights in the tunnel are small individual rows of lights terrible for the eyes. The speed control vehicles travel 20km below the actual speed limit causing more trouble than solving it . Enough said
  • Great views, speed limit 50-70 km/h
  • Pay attention to the the speed limit when you are in the tunnel the speed is 70 km do not do over it or you will pay for it at the other end of tunnel. But mont-bianco is so beautiful and the view is WOW
