  • All the way (450 steps... to descend... and of course, go back to the famous Cave of ice... 10 m in length only, and little to see... I won't say anything more for the courageous who will go...

  • Very nice cave to visit to always learn a little more about the history of the glacier and the mountain. It's fast because the cave is not great, but worth the trip, provided they are in condition because there are more than 400 steps to back then

  • Once at the arrival station of the red train Montenvers at nearly 2000 m altitude definitely the hike more detail in this lovely place is visit la Grotte de Glace. Next to the station to catch a cable car (free) to get down to the language of the Mer de Glace glacier, which is at a lower height of the Valley. Get off the gondola has yet to target. In fact you need to take a large and well maintained. Sometimes plates recall the height that the glacier had years ago; at the 1990 plate you notice that now the glacier is far lower: Unfortunately the thaw is unstoppable. After about 10 minutes of descent (to return will climb) here we are on the glacier and an opening type tunnel opens before us. Practically it is dug (artificially) inside the glacier. Looking deeper you look at the walls of pure ice. Artificial lighting compensates for dim light that filters through overhanging walls. It is undoubtedly a particular and unique visits

  • Fantastic as a novice to the Alps, have to go to the glacier. The degree to which the glacier has dropped is dramatic
  • What a nICE cave! Totally worth the many many steps. Shame global warming will see this one disappear in my lifetime..
  • Natural ice caves within the largest glacier in France? Five stars! Plus beautiful and imposing views of aiguille verte from the valley below. Highly recommend!
  • Plan to visit during colder months when the ice is not melting. Overall, the most impressive bit was seeing how far the glacier has retreated over the last 200 years. The signage could be better done but it is fascinating all the less and makes you keenly aware of the physical impacts of climate change.
  • If you're a serious climber then this can be done without a harness but even so I would advise protecting yourself as a single slip is going to end "very badly". However, if you're competent with a rope and know how to belay or have Via Ferrata kit (or at a push, a harness and a couple of slings and Karabiners) then suddenly it all becomes wonderful as the setting is stunning and let's face it climbing down a ladder isn't exactly technical. Once on the glacier all the usual care needs to be taken so if you don't know exactly what you're doing in this kind of environment then I'd strongly suggest hiring a mountain guide to keep you safe. Enjoy!
