Chateau des Milandes, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle

In 1489, Chateau des Milandes was the main residence for the lords of Caumont. Today, it is best known as the former home of entertainer Josephine Baker, who restored this "Sleeping Beauty" castle in the late 1940s. Tour parts of the castle for a glimpse into Baker's intriguing life, walk through the bucolic gardens, or take in a Birds of Prey show that features some of the best fliers in the castle's falconry. • Appearance and location of the Castle and the beautiful prospects are great. Admission is - as unfortunately to many attractions in the Périgord - rather intense. Who wants to see how lived a dancer of past century undoubtedly shaping your industry, you will here find it. The well-crafted exhibition keeps you under their spell for quite a while. Who an old castle is located (and want to), better heading Castenaud or Beynac. The small park is pretty, but not really waiting with impressive attractions. People who like wild bird's eye (which are presented in the Périgord at various points) 2 x comes on the day his attraction: 11:00, and I mean to 15:00 and 16:00. The show is primarily in French, with some short English commentary. All in all ok but worth a 2nd visit for me.

  • A tribute to Joséphine Baker in the Castle where she spent so many years, a very good case for this great lady. A castle to visit.

  • What a story this Chateau has. Such a sadness of its previous owner Josephine Baker, the wonderful singer and dancer. Her life began from rags to rise to riches and then bag to rags again. A wonderful...  more »

  • Josephine Baker's former home with really evocative exhibits about her life. The Château is a refreshing change from medieval warfare and caves and really deserves half a day. The falconry show is the best in the area, the gardens are beautiful at different times of the year. I've been in spring, summer and autumn.Good quality food at a fair price, descent children's play area, friendly welcoming staff. It's worth looking out for musical theatre nights.
  • Really beautiful château with a great history attached. Very interesting well laid out tour. The grounds are beautiful and the birds of prey show is fantastic.
  • This is a fascinating place. The chateau has been excellently restored by the current owners (the new oakwork is a particular highlight). However the real treat comes when learning about its previous owner, Josephine Baker. She was a remarkable woman. To know more, you have to visit!
  • Better than I expected, walk through chateau well done. Falconry demo also nice.
  • Beautiful place with a very interesting story behind it. Joséphine Baker is who makes this place. She really has left a big impression. The castle for sure deserves a visit if you're in the area. Bird show is spectacular. The food was somewhat disappointing.
