Chateau des Milandes, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle

4.6
#1 of 35 in Museums in Dordogne
In 1489, Chateau des Milandes was the main residence for the lords of Caumont. Today, it is best known as the former home of entertainer Josephine Baker, who restored this "Sleeping Beauty" castle in the late 1940s. Tour parts of the castle for a glimpse into Baker's intriguing life, walk through the bucolic gardens, or take in a Birds of Prey show that features some of the best fliers in the castle's falconry. • Beautiful, well made and moving exhibitions... We ran out of time to enjoy the animations and the gardens... We will return...

  • We spent a beautiful day! From the financial point of view, for once in the area, the parking is free and entertainment included in the price of admission! The generosity of Joséphine Baker must continue to hover over this castle... Our grandson has been captivated by the very educational animation dedicated to falconry, thanks to the facilitator for his great kindness, children are asked constantly and thus costumed feel concerned, in a vaulted room, the atmosphere allows a listen to everyone. The show is complementary, falconers know how to use humor and professionalism, a great time spent... Then, we have discovered inside the Castle... A real treat of the senses, the parts are richly devoted to Joséphine Baker, what achievements! And especially what a wonderful woman! Many thanks to the owners of the Castle, to the duty of memory realized, the soul of Josephine there always...

  • Rarely I leave a review on Tripadvisor, but there I had to... I'm 35 and I accompanied the Milandes Castle a group of retirees now 1 month ago. Old Castle (blah I think), Josephine Baker (unknown to the battalion), I thought spending an afternoon funny... And well, even still now, 1 month later, I let still a tear... First of all, congratulations to owners and the team, that we fail to commend on the spot. It must be said that without private investment, such a place could fall into disrepair. Deep respect to you, owners and to the employees very friendly (one of she, adorable, is the doppelganger of Josephine!) And the content... Exterior wonderfully arranged and maintained. Go only downside I don't see the real interest of the raptors, but that's a detail. The Castle and the history of Josephine: little by little we feel spellbound in her life and her story. A highlight of a wonderful woman who deserves to be better known and recognized. More is not needed, only to hear his feelings will transport you in the knowledge of this place. Still bravo and thank you. Jimmy

  • Fabulous gardens and the chateau is so interesting. Great audio guide that you control yourself. Fascinating story of Josephine Baker's life with photos and artefacts. And the bird display was very enjoyable. All in all it was a lovely day out. Highly recommend.
  • Really lovely visit here with my family. Beautiful and interesting gardens, loved the bird aivieries, and the Bird of Prey show was of a good legnth of time and very interesting with lots of opportunities for viewers to take photos. Then inside the Chateau to view the Josephine Baker collection. Really well done. Staff were polite, friendly and spoke good English. Nice clean toilets and nice restaurant. Parking very close to the chateau and a beautiful drive to get there. We went in the morning as it can get warm in the afternoon and in the summer Im sure its packed. Good value for money.
  • Stunning chateaux with the main attraction a collection dedicated to the life of stage star Josephine Baker who lived there. You get to see her clothes and the famous banana skirt plus much more. Something very different from the usual. The gardens are beautiful too. Highly recommended.
  • A great afternoon! We were there for three hours, tour of the chateau, bird displays beautiful gardens and a lovely place to stop for refreshments.
  • Beautiful chateau. Very interesting blending of the chateau history with the story of Josephine Baker.
