Chateau des Milandes, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle

4.5
#1 of 30 in Museums in Dordogne
In 1489, Chateau des Milandes was the main residence for the lords of Caumont. Today, it is best known as the former home of entertainer Josephine Baker, who restored this "Sleeping Beauty" castle in the late 1940s. Tour parts of the castle for a glimpse into Baker's intriguing life, walk through the bucolic gardens, or take in a Birds of Prey show that features some of the best fliers in the castle's falconry. • In country Abbe, it is in this region that you will find the castle of the 15th century. But in the 20th century, thanks to Joséphine Baker, who praise it as a first step, that the Castle will become known. Especially since 1947, when she'll buy the Castle, to settle with all his children. The first impression is Visual, thanks to the architecture of the whole, and the visit is made much easier through the audioguide. Naturally, it is the story of the 20th century that emerges mainly, with Joséphine Baker's life, her career, her children until the sale of the estate. Then there is also this beautiful Raptor show, which is presented to the visitors on the back patio of the Castle. A restaurant with a terrace on the side, welcome visitors after the visit.

  • Stunning chateaux with the main attraction a collection dedicated to the life of stage star Josephine Baker who lived there. You get to see her clothes and the famous banana skirt plus much more. Something very different from the usual. The gardens are beautiful too. Highly recommended.
  • Great day out. Very informative. Interesting for all ages
  • Josephine Baker's former home with really evocative exhibits about her life. The Château is a refreshing change from medieval warfare and caves and really deserves half a day. The falconry show is the best in the area, the gardens are beautiful at different times of the year. I've been in spring, summer and autumn.Good quality food at a fair price, descent children's play area, friendly welcoming staff. It's worth looking out for musical theatre nights.
  • Excellent day out Lots to see and the gardens are wonderful
  • This is a fascinating place. The chateau has been excellently restored by the current owners (the new oakwork is a particular highlight). However the real treat comes when learning about its previous owner, Josephine Baker. She was a remarkable woman. To know more, you have to visit!
