Architectural Building Historic Site
Atop a rocky peak, Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou is a historical abbey that dates back to the tenth century. An earthquake in 1428 caused severe damage. Much of the abbey was restored in the 20th century, resulting in the mostly intact structures you can visit now. The abbey church is actually made up of two superimposed churches. The lower one is dedicated to St. Mary, and the upper church is dedicated to St. Martin. Look closely at the upper church's construction, where you'll find three naves separated by monolithic columns. A small chapel houses the relics of St. Gaudérique. The cloister has been entirely altered from its original form, but you can read about the early construction. • An almost surreal place high up on the flank of le Canigou. This is a functioning monastry, and a very scenic one too. They even sell their crafts in the little shop next to the monastry buildings. Ma...  more »

  • Beautiful Abbey set high up. Expect a 50 min walk to get to the top, not for the faint hearted or those with walking problems. We were too late to get into the Abbey but just walking round the outside...  more »

  • Fantastic place, definitelly worth seeing. Though there is only guided tour in French language and you cannot walk there by yourself. However, the views and the abbey itself are wonderful and the place is very calm. We were told that they also accommodate volunteers who come to meditate there and help with some work.
  • Gorgeous mixed sex abbey ;) ! - a great reward after the pretty walk up from the village. Rather an intense guide; but a photograph wherever you look.
  • Awesome place. Splendid location in mountains, the cloister itself is fantastic! Payed guided visits inside, which are worth attending, are led by a local monk or a temporary resident. Don't miss a 5 minute walk to a viewpoint above the Abbey.
  • Great place with good feel
  • An accessible community where Christian faith is celebrated several times a day at different offices. An exceptional and extraordinary Millennium environment.
