4.7/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web
Atop a rocky peak, Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou is a historical abbey that dates back to the tenth century. An earthquake in 1428 caused severe damage. Much of the abbey was restored in the 20th century, resulting in the mostly intact structures you can visit now. The abbey church is actually made up of two superimposed churches. The lower one is dedicated to St. Mary, and the upper church is dedicated to St. Martin. Look closely at the upper church's construction, where you'll find three naves separated by monolithic columns. A small chapel houses the relics of St. Gaudérique. The cloister has been entirely altered from its original form, but you can read about the early construction. • Heritage day forces and free: we have done the climb worthy of the major passes of the tour de France (20%). hard drive. Not much to see (garden, some rooms... and a show of hands carved in wood) However if it continues to rise a bit we discovered a great point of view. NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN TOO

  • Awesome place. Splendid location in mountains, the cloister itself is fantastic! Payed guided visits inside, which are worth attending, are led by a local monk or a temporary resident. Don't miss a 5 minute walk to a viewpoint above the Abbey.
  • Great place with good feel
  • Magnificent Abbey seen from the outside as closed the month of January. See the photo of the schedules that I join. On the other hand, one can go there in January and admire the exterior architecture.

  • Beautiful walk up. Even with buggy/stroller to do, so much for the go-getters. Forget not above a little further to climb to a beautiful picture.
