Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou, Casteil

Atop a rocky peak, Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou is a historical abbey that dates back to the tenth century. An earthquake in 1428 caused severe damage. Much of the abbey was restored in the 20th century, resulting in the mostly intact structures you can visit now. The abbey church is actually made up of two superimposed churches. The lower one is dedicated to St. Mary, and the upper church is dedicated to St. Martin. Look closely at the upper church's construction, where you'll find three naves separated by monolithic columns. A small chapel houses the relics of St. Gaudérique. The cloister has been entirely altered from its original form, but you can read about the early construction. What to say about this beautiful place. a climb at Nice and a little physical foot of 1600 meters (for children). the visit is good but it is especially the site itself even worth visiting .panorama calm everything is perfect.

We decided to climb towards the abbaye. A very nice (50m) walk with the children. Very steep but better than to pay a lot of money if you go by a 4x4 car (you need to). Once arrived it was really nice...  more »

A very good time spent with a student guide in art history, at the end of a sport climbing. It's a unique moment, very... mystique to be there.

A stiff hike up into the clouds is like ascending to heaven, as the roar of the river fades away and the sound of crickets takes over. You stumble over the abbey as it suddenly appears, rearing up out of the rock. A well stocked gift shop with tasteful religious items and interesting books, excellent viewpoints around the precincts, and a wonderful 45 minute tour of the cloister, crypt and church. My particular guide (a lay member of the community) was absolutely excellent, and her talk was so clear I understood every word despite only having a little French.

nice excursion with kids ( 2/3 hours walking) the best walk is through the forest . in this case you have to follow the coll de jau , you will find a waterinstallation with the white/ yellow indication. ( 1 hour to get up) here is shade during warm days. enjoy !

Isolated Abbey dating back the year 1009. Encapsulated among the pyrenees , the access is by foot only (1,6 km) or taking a cab. A small community of monks still lives here. Not to be missed.

It is nice but I am not sure whether it is worth the route.

Fantastic place, definitelly worth seeing. Though there is only guided tour in French language and you cannot walk there by yourself. However, the views and the abbey itself are wonderful and the place is very calm. We were told that they also accommodate volunteers who come to meditate there and help with some work.
