Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou, Casteil
(4.7/5 based on 180 reviews on the web)
Atop a rocky peak, Abbaye Saint Martin du Canigou is a historical abbey that dates back to the tenth century. An earthquake in 1428 caused severe damage. Much of the abbey was restored in the 20th century, resulting in the mostly intact structures you can visit now. The abbey church is actually made up of two superimposed churches. The lower one is dedicated to St. Mary, and the upper church is dedicated to St. Martin. Look closely at the upper church's construction, where you'll find three naves separated by monolithic columns. A small chapel houses the relics of St. Gaudérique. The cloister has been entirely altered from its original form, but you can read about the early construction. • The climb is a bit rough at first, but who wants to go far household his mount... In fact it is not so terrible, 30 minutes walk from Casteil (absolutely by sports for my part). And here, the reward: a splendid Abbey in a superb site. My husband and I followed the guided tour from 11:00. A playful and adorable sister we learned a lot of things (and Yes, we forget over time!). Really very nice, we will return with our daughter.

  • Predict the rise based on visiting hours. Count 35 to 40 minutes minimum market (depending on its physical form).

  • Gorgeous mixed sex abbey ;) ! - a great reward after the pretty walk up from the village. Rather an intense guide; but a photograph wherever you look.
  • Fantastic place, definitelly worth seeing. Though there is only guided tour in French language and you cannot walk there by yourself. However, the views and the abbey itself are wonderful and the place is very calm. We were told that they also accommodate volunteers who come to meditate there and help with some work.
  • Awesome place. Splendid location in mountains, the cloister itself is fantastic! Payed guided visits inside, which are worth attending, are led by a local monk or a temporary resident. Don't miss a 5 minute walk to a viewpoint above the Abbey.
  • Great place with good feel
  • One of the most beautiful monasteries in the Pyrenees. Be careful though because you can only visit accompanied in time. The tour lasts about an hour.
