Roman Catholic Church, Cargese

4.8
#5 of 19 in Historic Sites in Corse-du-Sud
See some of the architecture remaining from the Greek colonies on Corsica at Roman Catholic Church. From the outside, the church seems very modest with its plain colors; once inside, however, you'll likely be taken aback by the artwork you see. Vibrant frescos jump out as you enter, art pieces for different saints sit at the front, and chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The church grounds offer a good view down into town and over the water. • Curiosity is the fact that the two churches are face to face and dominate the Bay of Cargèse. The icons are very well preserved, the frescoes also. A must see.

  • This church is very endearing in several ways: the exceptional site overlooking the Mediterranean, in front of his counterpart the Latin Church, the relaxing plot (Yes we are in Corsica!) and the simplicity of the interior decoration and the iconostasis and for this close to us. Certainly, it is not comparable to the great cathedrals of Eastern Europe, but admire the fresco of the Apocalypse to the right of the porch outside.

  • It is beautiful this church! At the northern end of the Gulf of Sagone, on a granite promontory, the village of Cargèse dominates a beautiful Bay since the end of the 18th century. This is one of the most recent human imports of Corsica. In reality, the site was occupied 1siecle earlier by Greek exiles who fled the Turks and which were authorised by the Republic of Genoa to settle here. But the Greeks quickly aroused the jealousy and hostility of the Corsicans because they prosperaient and especially they were allied with the Genoese enemy. Their homes were burned and the Greeks fled to Ajaccio. He will take Corsica becomes French so that the Greeks return based Cargèse.
