Cathar Castles, Carcassonne

(4.7/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
See the World Heritage-listed walled citadel at Cathar Castles and get a glimpse into one of the most dramatic periods of French history. Locals often refer to these castles as "cinq fils de Carcassonne," the five sons of Carcassonne. Built by the French kings to protect the country's southern border against invasions from Spain, the structures stand on spots once occupied by small but heavily fortified villages. Abandoned after France and Spain signed a peace treaty in 1659, the fortresses lost their importance and slowly fell into disrepair. Restored in the 20th century, Carcassonne's castles and their citadel now serve as the region's main tourist attractions. Put Cathar Castles into our Carcassonne tourist route planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The Cathar Castle of Carcassone is a medieval castle and is highly conserved. Its massive walls are impressive from a distance, when we got to town. Within its walls, alleys, narrow stones filled with good shops, cafes, restaurants, make the place nice. The site is full of tourists, but still makes you feel in the middle ages. You must purchase a ticket to enter the Castle. The castle is well preserved, starting with your bridge, and inside the castle we have impressive views of the city and the region. The kids enjoyed a lot, played that were Medieval warriors. I highly recommend this visit, to see some more of the medieval history of France. Inside the castle is a place that passes a projection explaining about the origins of the Castle, as well as of your restoration. Important to inform that there are a lot of stairs, and they are quite narrow.

  • It is not a castle, there are several and scattered a large area. Impossible to visit them in a day, rather need 3 or 4 days. They are part of history and a part of French culture, which also came to Spain. It is convenient to read about them and provide maps and information before you begin the adventure, but they will not disappoint. I'll be back to visit them with more time

  • Ever heard of the Cathars? They were big in this part of the world 800 years ago and they changed world history. If you.re interested in them you could read some books about them, or come on one of these week-long tours, or better still do both. Highly recommended Tours. Thrilling history. This really is as good as it gets.
