  • Lots of restaurants, cafes and things to do, but suggest you go early as it does get busy. There are two parts to this city, and both are old and well worth visiting.  more »

  • Best preserved medieval city bar none on this planet. Walking through the streets truly is like time travelling to a different day and age. To avoid big crowds it is recommended to come after 18h. Take a walk around between the inner and outer wall of the fortress to see all it's towers plus opportunities for breathtaking pictures in the low evening sun.
  • Absolutely beautiful place. Medieval (although rebuilt/restored later) fortress with interesting histories to read about. The castle with city wall walk requires a ticket (free for under 26!), and the outer city walls and the village itself is free - actually many locals visit the cafe and restaurants in the area too. If you are looking for some very original medieval castle, unfortunately that had long gone, and you may find the reconstructed castle a bit too new.
  • Wonderful castle, so much history with great views of Carcassonne. Lots of restaurants, souvenir shops and ice cream parlours to round out a full day. Be prepared for a lot of walking, lots of steps and a long walk from the car park at the bottom.
  • The size and location of this citadel was imposing and impressive. To think that it had survived all these centuries is also something! Yes, it is a bit commercial inside the walls and lots of touristy shops, but after they close for the night and the crowds have gone away, to wander the streets in the evening was very atmospheric and transporting.
  • It is a fun trip for families but bear in mind that the whole "old walled city" is pretty much a re-creation, everything rebuilt or designed to look like it's from the medieval period but reconstructed, kinda like Epcot Center. A little too faux for my tastes but as I said, great for families with kids. Be forewarned that it gets really crowded in there, hordes of tourists. As far as I can tell, there are no real residents living inside the old city; it's all given over to tourism.
