Carcassonne Medieval City, a fully restored, fortified French town dates back more than 2,000 years. This site is widely considered one of the best examples of a well-preserved medieval city with heavy fortifications. A classic fortress on a high peak features architectural influences from the Romans, fifth-century Visigoths, and later occupants. You can explore two rings of fortified walls with battlements, conical towers, bridges, stone streets, and medieval buildings. • Best preserved medieval city bar none on this planet. Walking through the streets truly is like time travelling to a different day and age. To avoid big crowds it is recommended to come after 18h. Take a walk around between the inner and outer wall of the fortress to see all it's towers plus opportunities for breathtaking pictures in the low evening sun.
  • Beautiful place to spend a day. The visit to the castle is a good idea, however you can skip it since it doesn't change much of the overall view you get from the city. You have a good choice for restaurants and bars, and great souvenir stores
  • An amazing place. We did not expect such a gem when we walked up to visit the castle. Yes it's a bit touristy, but if you visit early the place is yours to explore. Well worth a visit.
  • Absolutely beautiful place. Medieval (although rebuilt/restored later) fortress with interesting histories to read about. The castle with city wall walk requires a ticket (free for under 26!), and the outer city walls and the village itself is free - actually many locals visit the cafe and restaurants in the area too. If you are looking for some very original medieval castle, unfortunately that had long gone, and you may find the reconstructed castle a bit too new.
  • Very beautiful and well maintained. There are shops and estaurants, full of people, but also small streets almost empty, very nice to walk. Not expensive (neither hotels nor restaurants) taking into account the number of visitors they receive. Close to l'Aude port, there are free parking places.

Where to stay in Carcassonne

Although the picturesque La Cite is a tempting place to stay, consider the quieter and more affordable La Bastide Saint Louis down the hill. La Bastide provides easy access by foot to the walled La Cite for daily tours and peace and quiet after dark.
