Cité de Carcassonne, a fully restored, fortified French town dates back more than 2,000 years. This site is widely considered one of the best examples of a well-preserved medieval city with heavy fortifications. A classic fortress on a high peak features architectural influences from the Romans, fifth-century Visigoths, and later occupants. • We stayed for 3 nights to give 2 clear days. We were there in August and due to co vid I believe not so busy. For where we were staying (Pelletier du claux) we could clamber up the fortified city...  more »

  • This is the definitive example of a fortified medieval city. For most people, this is what you envision when you think of castles. Well maintained and well displayed museum takes you through the history of the place. Great shopping, restaurants and strolling. You can easily spend an entire day here and not have seen everything. Great experience dispite the crowds.
  • Excellent place for tourists. Well worth coming to see the castle city and the city outside. It takes a while to get to know the streets inside the castle walls. Done nice shops. Quite a few restaurants. Most places have English and Spanish translations.
  • A great hotel in a great location. Being inside the old city walls was a wonderful experience. The hotel is everything you can hope for. Get there early to experience the old town after all the day trippers have left. Also, the hotel restaurant is a Michelin starred restaurant, so get reservations.
  • Amazing place. Very busy but not overly. Free to wander around but castle is a 9€ entrance fee. Worth it if you like exploring castles. Plenty of places to eat. We ate in the square where there is a good atmosphere
  • A must see if you're anywhere in the South of France. Make the effort to get there. I thought it was very beautiful in the early to late evening. That's not taking anything easy from a day visit. Also, the laser show from the closest bridge was fantastic. Fabulous world heritage building.
