Ile Sainte-Marguerite, Cannes

4.5
#3 of 18 in Nature in French Riviera - Cote d'Azur
The Île Sainte-Marguerite is the largest of the Lérins Islands, about half a mile off shore from the French Riviera town of Cannes. The island is approximately 3km in length (East to West) and 900m across. The island is most famous for its fortress prison (the Fort Royal), in which the so-called Man in the Iron Mask was held in the 17th century.HistoryThe island is first known to have been inhabited during Roman times, when it was known by the name Lero. The island was probably renamed in medieval times by crusaders, who built a chapel to Saint Margaret of Antioch on the island. In the 14th century, probably due to the writings of Raymond Féraud, the island became associated with a fictional Sainte Marguerite, sister to Saint Honoratus, founder of the monastery on the neighbouring Île Saint-Honorat. According to legend, Sainte Marguerite led a community of nuns on the island which was named after her.In 1612, ownership of the island passed from the monks of Saint-Honorat to Claude de Lorraine, Duke of Chevreuse. Shortly after, construction of a fort on the island (to become the Fort Royal) began. In 1635, the island was captured by the Spanish and recaptured by the French two years later.Towards the end of the 17th century, the Fort Royal became home to a barracks and state prison. During the 18th century, the present-day village of Sainte-Marguerite developed, thriving on the spending power of the soldiers stationed on the island.

We just spend the whole day and I advise you to do the complete tour of the island by the access road (9 km anyway!). So be sure to bring water because it was very hot today. The path gives access to small coves with pebbles or rocks. There is no sandy beach on the island and you need to bring shoes type jellyfish to swim. The water is very clear and clean although a little cool.

Island calm despite hundreds of boats nearby. Difficult to bathe in some places but the setting is really beautiful.

A beautiful pine forest and an interesting medieval prison museum. Rocky beach and couldn't see the lake because it is surounded by a fence but it is a natural reservation so it makes sense. A lot of beautiful sides which makes it fun to visit.

Amazing place. There is a boat directly from Cannes, every hour.

Island small, very pretty. It can be reached from Cannes, Juan les Pins and ferry boats in about 20 minutes with Golf Juan. On the island there are a multitude of things to do in a Fortress Museum, with archaeological finds from shipwrecks, with prisons that it is said to have hosted the ' man in the iron mask. '' Many small beaches, coves with gravel and rocks, some with rocks, recommended shoes to get into the sea. A pond large pine forest where you can admire many species of birds. Trails to get around the island. Various outdoor tables for picnics and stops. Large pine trees to relax in nature close to the sea. A lido and two restaurants on the sea. Deserves a full day tour. There is a hostel for young people and children on the island, like the boy scouts. You can camp or light fires and there are many controls appropriately to preserve the ' nature ' of the place

Beautiful island wild, full of little Creek, think you away directly to be quiet. Few people, very very big, wear shoes and shoes for the water market. May not be suitable for children unless Kit with you. Very nice and quiet. The price is more than justified.

The island is accessible by boat from Cannes. On-site no vehicles, quite different atmosphere of the coast, nature ubiquitous, small beaches and coves. There is also a museum. The island tour is 2 h on foot taking his time.
