Citadelle de Calvi, Calvi

(4.4/5 based on 1,400+ reviews on the web)
Set on a limestone promontory, the massive fortified Citadelle de Calvi offers panoramic views of the bay. Built by Genoese governors in 1450, the citadel has fended off quite a few major assaults throughout the centuries, including Franco-Turkish invaders and Anglo-Corsican soldiers. Engraved in marble on the porch, "Civitas Calvi Semper Fidelis" means that Calvi inhabitants are loyal to Genoa, an ironic statement because the French controlled the island--in alignment with the Turkish people. Go inside the battlements to see the governor's residence and the 13th-century Cathédrale St-Jean Baptiste that contains the celebrated "Christ des Miracles" relic made from ebony. Stroll the citadel's five bastions, each offering seascape views of Corsica's legendary calm waves. Our Calvi itinerary planner makes visiting Citadelle de Calvi and other Calvi attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Still a place that it is difficult to present as it has been described among the must-sees of the Balagne has missed during a sunset, especially since the exposed West esplanade, you will discover a wonderful view of one of the most beautiful peaks of Corsica "La Revelata" lovers of diving we will understand

  • Calvi is a city where old meets new, influences from countries around the Mediterranean have made the city into a melting pot of everything. A small town but with pulse, this is all about than on a smaller scale. A paradise for those who love the sea and sport facilities that belong to, but also excellent as a base for long hikes in the mountains. The food is amazing, Calvi is gloriously liberated from all the fast food chains, it offers only genuine prepared food with mostly self-produced raw materials. Calvi is real in all its simple splendor, a diamond who managed to meet tourism without destroying the soul.

  • This is a nice place to walk around. Lots of nice views from several vantage points. Plan about an hour. Worth the hike up!  more »
