Memorial de Caen, Caen

4.4
A modern museum focusing on World War II and the Cold War, Memorial de Caen was built in 1988. It charts the events leading up to and after D-Day, and is an emotional presentation inviting meditation on the thought of Elie Wiesel: "Peace is not a gift from God to man, but a gift from man to himself." The Memorial for Peace also includes an exhibit of Nobel Peace Prize winners and another on conflict resolution in different cultures. • Great evening walking around the walls and getting close to the statues. Free to enter and so nice to see  more »
  • This museum gives an excellent overview of the historic period from WW1 to the end of the Cold War. This museum is not only for the memorial of the D day invasion. The setup is very professional and.....  more »

  • Colourful and interesting exhibits, laid out with an engaging narrative. Explanations were relevant, concise and easy to follow. This museum doesn't just collect objects, it uses them selectively and effectively to tell a story. For example, the prayer for America displayed in hotels during the Cold War was both amusing and an insight into American mentality at the time. One of the few museums I was neither disappointed nor overwhelmed by.
  • If you visit Caen, you must visit here. It was a fabulously designed and thought through museum, with lots of information and demonstrations to suit all knowledge levels. The exhibits managed to explain the causes and developments of the war from political, military and human points of view. Informative and emotional. Well worth the visit, as a reminder of how close we came to losing our freedom.
  • Definitively a must-visit. The War museum is a good complement to the visit of the D-day Landing beaches. Don't miss the temporary exhibition about Norman Rockwell and Roosevelt's Four Freedoms. It gives a good overview of Rockwell's long working life as illustrator and painter... Great exhibition
  • From outside the building is an impressive structure, once inside and having paid almost 20 Euros, it's a slightly different story. If you were expecting tanks, aircraft or guns there are surprisingly few with most of the content being endlessly looped black-and-white videos of archive footage.
  • An excellent museum! They have child care for 6m-10year. Highly recommend it as some of the exhibits may not be appropriate for children. Child care was closed from 12:45-1:45 for lunch. Fantastic museum that focuses more on the civilian impacts of the war instead of just the military aspects.
