In repentance for marrying, cousins William the Conqueror and Mathilda of Flanders ordered Abbaye aux Dames built along with its neighbor, Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey). The women's abbey was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Each church is considered one of the most notable Romanesque buildings in Normandy. Built in Caen stone during the 11th century, both churches had the ribbed vault, used for the first time in France, added to them in about 1120. • an impressive compound (wrongly here on Tripadvisor also listed under Abbaye aux Hommes, which is in fact a much smaller place behind the Abbaye aux Dames). definitely a must when in Caen.  more »

  • Love coming here and seeing the change of exhibitions. Always so peaceful.
  • Free entry to such a historic building
  • Wonderful to see a wedding in the autumn sun.
  • Founded around 1060 by Matilda of Flanders, William the Bastard's spouse, the Abbaye-aux-Dames (Women's Abbey) was consecrated on 18th June 1066 and dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
  • Even though I'm not really into churches, cathedrales and abbeys, this one really impressed me through its atmosphere and grandiosity. Also, don't forget to visit the most beautiful parc nearly.
