Abbaye aux Dames, Caen

4.2
#3 of 7 in Historic Sites in Caen
In repentance for marrying, cousins William the Conqueror and Mathilda of Flanders ordered Abbaye aux Dames built along with its neighbor, Abbaye aux Hommes (Men's Abbey). The women's abbey was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Each church is considered one of the most notable Romanesque buildings in Normandy. Built in Caen stone during the 11th century, both churches had the ribbed vault, used for the first time in France, added to them in about 1120. US planes decide to do our photos to the Abbey to the ladies. The morning of September 16, the photographer starts asking if it is possible to take pictures. He was told Yes. The after noon we are back and we are forbidden to take pictures inside. Absurd thing because we said yes in the morning. Claiming that it is the heritage day and that you need a permit. Knowing that being a day heritage day open historical monuments including the Abbey House public place ladies. All visitors taking pictures of course, we're off the Abbey. We treat a liar because supposedly we came do wedding photography (I had a dress blue and non-white). In the end, we decide to go to the Abbey for men. There where we didn't need authorization despite the number of visitor more consequence than the Abbey to the ladies. This remains unacceptable. And the mediocre hotel.

The do have all travelled within Europe but during our recent trip to Normandy, we noted that there is nothing in the morning to visit in France falls ... At least definitely not for 11 am ... We had therefore not the honour and the pleasure to view inside this building. What a pity

A very bright, lovely simple interior, with a few brilliant highlights. The stained-glass by the altar, magnifique! And there above, a ceiling painting To mistily the imagination. Peaceful.  more »

Even though I'm not really into churches, cathedrales and abbeys, this one really impressed me through its atmosphere and grandiosity. Also, don't forget to visit the most beautiful parc nearly.
